Thursday December 6 2007 We have a couple more inches of new snow to go with the 5 to 6" already on the ice. This has slowed the ice making considerably. Average ice is about 9" right now. We are supposed to see 20 below Friday night so that will help. Maybe we can get started driving before the next weekend, we will see. That really would not be far behind the average start.

Wednesday December 12 2007 Ice conditions continue to improve although slowly. Most areas have 10-12" with 13" or more where my road will start out. We are to get plenty of wind tomorrow then -15 or so tomorrow night. If all goes well I will start plowing a road Friday am. Then start getting a few more houses out. The walleye bite seems strong in 6-9' water especially late in the day. Most are waiting for a little more ice to chase after crappies.

Friday eve December 14 2007 The windy conditions yesterday kept most off the lake. Today was much nicer. The wind blew some snow here and there but there is still 4-6" or more most places. The ice has gained nicely with 11-13" most all places and 15" plus where I froze down the road. I plowed out a 1/2 mile this am (plenty for walleye fishing) and took out a couple houses. Will probably wait until after the weekend to push out to the 14' waters. We should be open fully by next weekend in time for the holiday fishing!!

Monday am December 17 2007 We started driving pickups out on Friday with 11+ to 15" inches of ice. Put out some smaller houses and will begin bringing some of the bigger ones out later in the week. The walleye bite was kinda slow during the day with the best action right at dusk. We should be fully open by this weekend and have road out to deeper water to try walleye and crappie fishing!

Thursday December 20 2007 Much milder temps have been the order of late but ice conditions are good. 13 to 15+" most every where out front here. We have a road out over 1-1/4 miles to the 13-14' water. Walleye fishing was very good out there yesterday and even saw a crappie or two today. The "eyes" are also active in closer and some pike hitting on tip-ups.

Friday December 28 2007 Finally some stable weather with light winds. A couple good reports on crappie but mostly just one or two here and there. The walleye continue to be pretty strong with afternoons, evenings and after dark being the best times. The lake roads are in good shape as one tons with 20'+ houses able to go out in good shape now.

Tuesday January 1 2008 Happy New Year!! It has been a busy 5 or 6 days here with a lot of folks taking long weekends to fish Upper Red. The weather did cooperate nicely as did the fish for many. It was spotty though especially Saturday. A lot of walleye success, bonus crappies here and there and quite a few big pike. Cold tonight then a warm up by this weekend.

Monday am January 7 2008 The walleye action continued strong for many on Friday but became very spotty Saturday. Some did ok but many found a slow bite. It picked up some on Sunday ( with 40+ degrees many enjoyed just fishing outside). The temps are to slowly cool down through the week and be much more normal by next weekend. Heard of a few crappie and pike over the weekend also

Thursday January 10 2008 We are getting back to more normal temps for January. The roads are in good shape. The walleye bite has been a little spotty, some are doing well others struggling to get keepers. The sleepers houses seem to be doing best with late afternoon and after dark action. Still a few crappie showing up and all sizes of pike being caught.

The temps held nicely for the weekend but dipped to -18 below last night. It is to warm up a little the next couple nights then start dropping off again. A little cold won't hurt as it should firm things up even more than the average 17-18" of ice we already have. The walleye bite was again spotty over this past weekend, some doing well others slow. Some picked up a few crappies and some various sizes of pike.

Thursday January 17 2008 BRRRR--- we definately have winter here with about -20 below this am. Tomorrow the wind is supposed to be cranking up out of the NW. Wind chills will be a factor as the cold is supposed to hang around all week end, but the winds should settle a bit by Saturday. The walleye bite remains on the spotty side, some had a lot of action this evening while others struggled. With the weather reports I expect traffic to be down especially those with portables. We will slowly improve conditions as days go by.

Noon Sunday January 27 2008 What a weekend to be on the lake! Mild temps, plenty of sun, light winds. While not everyone had a hectic bite there were a lot of very successful fishermen. Those in sleepers had an advantage to pick up busy rattle reels at all times of the night. Walleye were caught in most depths but the 12- 14' waters probably giving up the most fish. There were quite a few pike stories but so far crappies were very scattered. Another cold snap coming in by Tuesday but it is only to be a couple days long!

Friday eve February 1 2008 The mid-day and afternoon walleye bite was the strongest in quite a while, but the after dark action seemed to drop off. Go figure!!!! Hope some rattle reels get going later on tonight. Some crappie were caught in the rough ice 2.5 mile out. Not much for big pike today. Super Bowl Sunday has a lot people staying home and I expect a early take off Sunday am for most others. Stay tuned!!

Sunday February 3 2008 It's starting to quiet down out on Upper Red, just a few going on with many heading home to get the Super Bowl game on. Fishing this weekend was somewhat spotty, some slow, most fair and others with very good action. Walleye cooperated for most, some decent morning bite, scattered good mid- day, an evening run and some with late night rattle reel action. A few nice perch, various sizes of pike and some parties got into the crappies pretty good! All in all a lot of fun on the lake!!

Thursday eve. February 7 2008 A beautiful day on the lake, guess it's the calm before the storm! It sounds ok tomorrow but very windy for Saturday. Not a lot of people fishing mid-week but the walleye are definately still biting. Fish are being caught anywhere from 7- 14'. Most are fishing the 13-14' depths because they can pick up some crappies here and there. The rough ice areas increase the odds for the slabbers. Catching some perch during the day is also a good sign that the crappie may show up later, or early morn. Watch the weather this weekend!!

Sunday February 10 2008 Windy yesterday?? Oh yeah!! 30 to 50 mph whipping up the inch or so of fresh snow made for whiteout at times. Thankfully most were ready and stayed put until this am, the few others we got on their way & everyone was safe! While we had the roads open by 9 am we will be trimming up yet tomorrow. Fishing was again yes "spotty", some guys landed 25-30 fish alone while a few groups managed a limit of keepers for the weekend. Not any big numbers of crappie but quite a few pike the last couple days.

Thursday February 14 2008 We dodged a bullet with the winds we were to get last night and also today. Only about a 1/2" of new snow so it is a Happy Valentine's Day for me as I figured to be in the plow truck all day. The "eyes" continue to cooperate pretty good, some day bite but eves and after dark best for most. Still some fishermen hitting a run of crappie here and there in the 13-14' water. Pike cruising most all depths.

Tuesday am February 19 2008 We had quite a blow Sunday aft & most all night with 35 mph gusts. With the light snow it was about whiteout at times. Now the full moon phase is ushering in very cold temps (-25 degrees this am). With all the fronts it has been tough to get a consistent bite going. There were some who hit good walleye fishing but average action was slow this weekend past. A few had some spurts of crappie action but very scattered. Still some nice pike being caught, most released. Just six days left to the walleye-pike season and it sounds like a welcome warm up for the last weekend!

Monday an March 3 2008 Ice fishing may be winding down but winter sure is not. It is -5 below this am after a little snow yesterday and gusting NW winds last night. Not too many out here this past weekend and catch-release walleye were the most active, did not here much on crappie numbers. A few perch and some big pike still active also. Sounds like colder temps then warming up some by next weekend.

Sunday eve March 9 2008 It's nearly 8 pm and still light outside, spring must be getting closer! The walleye provided the most action this weekend, some nice perch and a few slabbers came in. Did not here of any big numbers of crappie though. It is to warm up this week more like March temps, right now roads are in very good shape. Next weekend houses must come off unless they are occupied overnight. We will continue to give you up-to-date info as to fishing and the ice conditions, keep checking

Thursday March 13 2008 After 3 days of 45 degrees it is definately more like March around here. Roads are holding up ok and should be able to handle trucks & wheelhouses this weekend. Not a lot of midweek traffic but those fishing are catching lots of the catch-release "eyes" and some crappies here and there. Still a few perch cooperating as well. Keep checking in for updates on fishing and road conditions!!

Monday March 17 2008 Happy St. Patrick's Day to all of the Irish (and at heart)! Just a few wheel houses out this weekend and most has good action (on perch and walleye) just a few crappie here and there. Sounds like a bit of snow tonight-tomorrow but temps are to be upper 30's all week. I think the ice roads should hold up a while yet just be sure to check in for updates!

MORT'S DOCK We still have winter...plenty of ice for wheelhouse traffic, snow is down so offroad travel is now possible many areas. Fishing is about the same..plenty of walleye, some perch, scattered crappie!!!

Monday April 7 2008 We received 3-4" of heavy snow yesterday while an hour south they got about two feet. We are down to ATV & snowmobile traffic for a few days this week, with Thursday being the last day our access will be open. Plenty of walleye action and a few perch this weekend with crappie hard to come by!

Saturday April 19 2008 It sounds like another 60 degree and sunny day. The shoreline is getting pretty spongy so today is the final day for ATV access. This is almost 3 weeks longer than last year, but now is time to "think spring". Another BIG THANK YOU to all the ice anglers that came up this winter. Hope to see you this summer sometime. We will give you updates as to ice out & other spring issues!
