I have a good friend up there fishing-so i know what the score is--they have a 8 x 16 wheel house, full sized cab and 1/2--;; there blocking there house up on 4 inch blocks- drilling holes and the water comes up, in 2 days time there moveing;;; (the ice is 14 inches but sags) and there trying to chase the eyes down the hole that got off during those 2 days in the water below the house floor--- and its hard to keep snow packed around house because of temps
there out 3 miles but no crappies yet

left at 10;00 am it was 14 below our best luck was on red demon glows and only 3 of the 4 holes produced them
we were not the only ones in that boat of dry time, from south to north to 8 miles out it was tuff fishing; we new of 6 crappies caught just around us (2 each) but monday night there were more being caught away from us and it was sounding better the snow is deep everyone, 4 wheel drives are the ticket but dont plan on pulling your house behind,, your not going far -- also plan on blocking your house about 4 inches up, we had 3 inches of water under the house but none around the outside of it;; it sure made it hard to chase them returns back down the holes we were out 41/2 miles out of Westwind on 14-15 inches of ice--there werent to many places to park but you have to get your Big Butts off the plowed roads;; or someone with a kind voice will ask you kindly the first time just ask the one driving the plow for a spot and a few bucks later everyones happy and fishing;;- if it wasnt for the plowers you couldnt get out there;;-- we plowed about 2 miles of road to the south of us before leaving to help out- there are no bridges out of WW, nice road hope this report helps yous

looks like Red is the most productive lake for eyes so far even if its spotty--there are some crappies showing up but there tuff to find-- from the years iv spent fishing that lake i found that is your catching 1 to 2 pound eyes in a flurry you have a darn good chance of catching a crappie that is traveling with them or just a bit behind them--fish of the same size in those groups travel together for the "im just as big as you, you cant eat me and I cant eat you" reason;; watching the camera not all fish come in at 1 level in a group; some on the very bottom, some 2-3 ft higher--Gators i always fish 4-5 ft under the ice -- we have watched them come in and check out all 4 minnows then settle to the bottom right in the center for hours at a time waiting for bigger prey then leave and an hour later come back and settle down again (same fish because of scrape marks on it) there a picky fish some days, iv even bounced jigs off there snout and they never moved
now from what i have read about last springs DNR count they were even surprised at the good crappie count yet but where are they? ''IS IT GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LAKE?"" thats ok with me im not going there so dont post any bad thoughts about it-
I always watched the sun towards March then looked for spots with muddy, silty bottoms (dark) it draws the minnows that are hatching out, look carefull in your holes they come up and in your warm holes--there about 1/8 long---ya food for fish- the whole lake does not hatch these all at one time--just certain spots that warm up at different times;; just my belief is thats when crappies start to school and feed heavy, not just drift around like now
keep the faith and keep trying

What are your thoughts?
do you think that there are a handfull of tight lipped crappie fisher men on Red that have found crappies but are guarding it so tight the info never gets out-
I myself have guarded such things while renting houses, the customers were even sworn to it- sure didnt want 500 houses around me with more customers coming

There are definitely tight lipped people out there on Red and every decent fishing lake for that matter. The fisherman that are tight lipped are the GOOD and SMART fisherman. There are a lot of nice crappies left to be had on Red, but you have to work hard to be successful. Sitting in your sleeper doesn't cut it anymore on Red. You have to be mobile and you have to have some common sense as well....along with some fishing skills. I will be up there soon to steal your big slabs!!! And release a few of course as well!!!!

well from the reports and reading iv done this week its been one tough season for most, even the pro's are having a little tuff luck this year- man!!! it kinda puts a guy in the dumps a little doesnt it?? knowing the season is ending for EYES AND GATORS-;; What date is that??
maybe those small perch will grow fast in the next few weeks so it will keep us temped to keep going out;;- im kinda afraid the ice will give out early this year because of the thickness is not great for this time of the year, were about 12 inches shy from previous years and thats not good-- and the weather man is not looking for any cold snaps that will last long I havent heard anything about ice house extentions North of 200 yet, thats a wait and see issue! this years weather put a big dent in all business's and I commend them in giving there Honest reports to all of us on ice conditions and fishing--dont forget them-- the season isnt done till the ice is gone;;
myself and Judge Judy hope to make the Perch contests on the Big Pond in Feb
keep your lines wet::

todays report from Morts sure started my blood moving faster in along time this year, hope you read it;;
on a second note reports of a big crack that opened up a ways out on Red- not sure of all the details yet but the crack is open- dont cross it unless you check with the road access persons--
Ninetoes had to move his house 6 inches to get back on his holes after it was done---- just a guess but only 6 inches;;; hummmm- he must have been on fish or stuck again and couldnt move it any more-- he usually has no tread left on his tires by this time of the year
Cookie can you fill in the blanks about the crack if its out of Westwind too

NINETOE

Hey, hey , hey , I dont need any tread on my tires! I just re wrap them with duct tape!

well the weather is going to wake everyone up out of a deep again this weekend; if the wind gets up to 50 mph like there looking at in the northwest area it will make things interesting
iv been there and done that-offdah we crawled to the truck and it took 2 of us to open the door, you couldnt stand;;- we saw 3 guys in a portable screaming as the wind blew them 50 ft at a time;- talk about trolling on the ice;;- our 24 pack was a block away in just 1 minute;;-
approximately 15 portables were in the tops of trees 40 ft high on shore;;- the wind blew so hard it would push our truck and wheeled fish house 5 ft sideways driving in on bare spots of ice
needless to say, tie your portables to your truck and dress warm or you might have jack frost nipping at something needless to say the WW bar was sure full

plows were even pulled off as they couldnt keep up with the drifting roads and white out conditions, some places wouldnt even allow traffic out
sure hope some of you that went out give us all an adventure report
there reporting - 80 to - 90 below wind chill this morning

Yes my gut feeling says there are rentals that are keepeing a tight lip and tell there customers to do the same. To each his own I guess as long as they get fish. We have done decent this year for crappies but nothing like last year, It may be time to consentrate on walleye next year? Time will tell

Alright, enough is enough, I'm heading up on Thursday and need someone to post some GPS coordinates to the mother load of crappies. Ha Ha, has anyone heard anything good? My father in law was out of WW much of last week and didn't do very well. If any tight lips want to open up please send a PM.

if your willing to drill 200 holes in a days time there are limits coming out, working the north shore and west, some have been caught on the south end also but they have really been working for them-Westwind also reported seeing more crappies coming in noe that the eye season closed and the warm weather is just around the corner

just got off the phone with some good friends of mine with there report (Live Action report)
wind, wind and more wind, white out conditions, tracks drifted in in less than 10 minutes-- 1 crappie in the bucket at 15 and 1/8,; 1 eye in the bucket at 151/2 and 3 gators closeing in at the bait;;- 1 28 inch gator took the bait, 2 more are still circleing and wont go away;
there on there second access road and drilling around 100 holes a day in portables;;- today is hunker down day and sip a few;
there out 9 miles now and moving back in;; my suggestion was never go to the end of the road most times since theres a lot of good ground in between thats never been touched

Hole Hopping!!!- this time of the year reminds me of Xmas all over again; drilled holes from the days before are staying open, just need a small bar to reopen them, the snow is dropping so you can drive almost anywhere you want, you can leave the house behind and have a great day bringing the wife along (that hates cold) the kids that just need to get out to burn off some energy ( just make sure you watch out for them)- theres some 10 and 12 inch holes drilled and open--i fell in one that someone covered with snow, What a Rush
I know Tyler, Cookie, are still chaseing those crappies down and found some last weekend to pull limits out; they go out of WestWind and AGASSIZ'S
the North shore out of Hillmans is producing too with a lot of searching, seems like the South end is kida slow for now but it could turn on soon;
iv been out there fishing till the second weekend in April some years but the shore lines were crappy and the cracks way out opened in a half hour everywhere
just a reminder its public water once you get on the lake and you can go anywhere but try to park off the roads, they bust up fast and still need to be maintained and plowed- also if you see liter and its not yours just take the time to wonder over and pick it up there are dumpsters on shore at every place to drop it off;
have a great time
