Yesterday was such a nice day I couldn't stay on shore and look at the lake any longer. So we took a truck and started clearing the snow from our ice road. We still only have have about 10 inches of ice but with the snow plowed to the side, the road should freeze up fast. We went out to 8 feet of water just off the last break so walleye fishing should be good there. Later in the day I took the snowmobile out about 4 miles and found what looks to be the start of a pressure ridge. It runs from NW to SW now, but that can all change on this lake in no time. We'll see what it looks like when we get a truck and some houses out that far. As for a ice thickness goes we have been finding a consistent 9-10 inches but there could be much less in some spots and you should be aware of that when heading into the lake. We still are suggesting ATV and snowmobile traffic onto the ice.
Now the fishing part of the report. Walleye action has been good anywhere from 7 to 11 feet of water. Not too many crappies have been caught yet (it still is early for them), but there are some around. Pike have been starting to hit the tipups near the river area. Good Luck and Be Safe!!!

Dec-13 update

The ice on the lake is slowly starting to thicken up. Now we have 10-12 inches in most of the untouched portions of the lake. The roads and snowmobile packed areas have around 14 inches. We have a road plowed out 1.5 miles and will be working on getting out farther everyday we can. If you see the plows out there working on a road, stay out of the way and let them do their job. We will let you know when the road is useable. We are letting smaller trucks and suv's onto the lake now. You should be careful with off road travel since the snow is about 9 inches deep and drifted more in some spots.
Now for the fishing report. The walleye have been hitting very good lately in 10 to 11 feet of water and also just off the last break in 7 feet. The crappies have been hard to find so far but will begin to show up soon. The pike are still in shallow around the river and just off the last break. With cold weather forecast at night the ice should start to come around and soon we will be out into crappie country. Good luck and be safe.

Here is a little update on the road. We are out 1.5 miles to the west into 11 feet of water and have another road plowed to the south about 1 mile down the shoreline following the break line of 6 to 7 feet of water. We are going to check the ice on Monday morning and if we find what we want, we are going to try and get out a little farther. The wind blew the snow around on the lake a lot on Thursday and actually helped us. The cold can now penetrate the snow and get to the ice. Temps at night are in the negitive #'s and that makes ice fast.

Update on the ice conditions first. We now have around 12 to 14 inches of ice in most of the areas we have checked. Our average in the houses we have set up is 13.5" and I have seen 19" in one spot. The ice really has varied in thickness this year because of the blown and drifted snow. The drifted snow is very hard and is tough to drive through, so use caution when getting off the roads. Also getting off the road is VERY important to us. Drilling a hole too close to the road will cause flooding and then a bad spot for us to have to plow around. So please try and get at least 100ft from the road before you set up your house. I have also plowed several paths to the north side of the road and marked them with two stakes making an X. The paths are for anyone to use to get off the main roads. The road goes out about 3 miles now, and I have also made another smaller road that follows a possible pressure ridge to the NW another 1/2 mile. The water depth where we are is 12.5 feet deep.

Now the fishing report!!! The walleye bite has been excellent the past 2 days. Guys are picking them up mostly in the morning from around 8-10 am and in the evening from 6-9 pm. The crappies are still hard to find but a few are being caught. The pike are still out there wherever you find walleyes. Last week I watched an angler pull up a 43" northern on a tip up he has set. He was one proud fisherman!! Hope this helps, and have a great holiday!!!

Patience is the key. The walleye seem to be there but waiting them out and fishing hard is the way to catch them. The walleye also seem to be biting very light, watching the graph for fish is a very effective way of knowing if they are there. Also a spring bobber will help you detect a bite too. The crappies have been showing up a little more now. Not to many are being caught but there are some around. The pike are still roaming the big waters and are hitting tip-ups with big shiners or sucker minnows. The hot colors still seem to be glow with red, and chartreuse.
The ice still seems to be about the same. 14 to 16 inches in the areas I have seen. With warm temps during the day the now heavy snow banks have cracked the ice under them allowing water to come to the surface and flood the edges of some of the roads. Stay away from the banks and don't try and cross them and you won't find yourself stuck in the slush. It's looking like cold weather for the weekend and by then every thing should be frozen up again. We have still been trying to plow out areas for wheel houses and portables. Ask in the bait shop before you head out on to the lake. And please Do Not set-up in the road. I know this sounds crazy but some people do it. Our main road now goes our 5.4 miles (by GPS) from West Wind. Good luck!!!

The walleye are much more active now and things are really looking good. We have seen numerous groups of fisherman with their limit plus many fish caught and released. Again getting away from people is the key. The farther of the beaten path the better you'll do. The walleye seem to be hitting a plain hook and splitshot during the day and the almighty glow jig in the evening. This weekends cold weather might have an effect on the attitude of the fish but we hope it stays positve. The crappies are still on the move and hard to find with the occasional one showing up here and there. Again the pike are still roaming the walleye waters and you'll always have your chance for a big one. Good Luck !!

The past few weeks have been filled with highs and lows, but now it looks like we are on the high side again. A slow day bite has been providing for a very decent evening and night bite. The Walleye still seem to be pretty light to hit the jig and a little work is needed to get the hook set. I have found that they need to be worked up off the bottom, dropping your jig into the mud and pulling it back out several times and then letting it sit 6 inches from the bottom works very effectively. The Pike are swimming in the same regions as the Walleye and are really aggressive when the come around, sometimes taking several lines at once. This really makes a mess but it's kinda fun.
The Crappies are coming. From the reports I've heard, they are on their way over from the reservation and should be here late February and March. Only time will tell how soon it will be. We do Have some openings in March for fish houses and cabins available, so book now.

How's the road out of the Westwind?

As the Walleye season continues, the bite is beginning to slow down a little. Anglers are seeing lots of fish on the electronics but are having a tough time getting them to take the lure. The ones that do bite are doing it very lightly. The bobber most of the time, won't even go under the water. This when you need to be paitent and test you fishing skill. The best time has been late evening from around 4-8 pm using glow jigs with red or pink.
The good news is we are getting closer to prime crappie time. We still have a few weeks before they really kick in so we'll keep you updated on the progress. Good Luck!!

The lake is still in great shape and the roads are open and ready for action. The crappie bite has still been slow and steady with a few showing up but not too many limits yet. The walleye are still there to keep you busy during the day and into the night. Even though the season is closed for walleye, it still is fun to catch and release a dozen 18 inchers while you are waiting for the crappies. I have also seen a nice number of perch coming off the lake. The weekend is going to be cold with warming temps coming next week which should help. If we get some warmer temps and steady weather the crappies are going to start to pick up. We know it will be a matter of time and the bite will be on. I sure am looking forward to catching a few nice slabs this spring. Good luck and thanks for looking.

Spring is getting closer now and the bite is starting to get better. The crappies are coming in in larger numbers from the north and working their way towards the mud flats in the center of the lake. The snow is getting low enough for offroad travel on atv's and trucks. A few weeks can make a big change around here and we will know soon when the crappies are here. We'll keep you posted on the latest news. The roads are still in good shape with no problems as of now. Good luck!!

The crappies are really starting to get going. The lake is not getting fish very hard and there are lots of fish to be found. The north shore seems to be the hot spot with the fish spread out along a very large area. They seem to be working out into the mud flats too. Glow jigs are still the ticket with the best times being from 7-10 pm. You may still need to drill a lot of holes to get on the fish but once you get into them it's worth all the work. There are a few nice sized perch showing up also. We have a few cabins available still for the remainder of the season. Good Luck!!
