Another great show guys. Interesting info on down sizing the wax worms. Had a few questions. For smaller bait did you guys try euro larvae at all? Was also wondering about not seeing you guys using minnows at all for those crappies.
Great footage from the underwater cameras. Its cool to see those pike come cruising threw.
I did try larva later in the day when we were down to our last few waxies. For reasons known only to bluegills they wouldn't touch them although smaller crappies wouldn't leave them alone. Same thing with the minnows. We actually started the day fishing minnows and had nothing to show for our efforts except for some smallish crappies. The larger gills and crappies were focusing in on the shrimp in the system and anything that wasn't the right size / color was ignored by the larger fish.
This shoot reminded me how tough big bluegills can be. We were literally surrounded by fish all day long... to get the bigger fish to commit was a task. Tiny little changes in jig color and bait seemed to make a huge difference for us.

Once again, another great show . It looks like it was a little cold where you guys were at. When is the next show scheduled and what type of fish are you going after?

I get a kick out of that scene when that muskie first comes through and the crappies freak out and go charging off in all ddirections. They even smashed into the camera in an effort to get the heck out of the way of that 'ski.

The next show will be filmed the first week in March. We're going to see if we can't get a 20 lb pike on film.
After that it will be a river walleye episode followed by a river smallmouth episode filmed mid-april.

Great show guys, the footage was crazy!!! Keep up the great work hope to be able see you down here in Iowa on the big screen someday, once again keep up the great work.
I've been using a camera for a few years now and "sight" fishing...which is sometimes the only way to put fish on ice...I never thought of using less than a whole waxy. I'm keeping that one under my hat!

Sweet I want in on that action! Didn't think anyone fished for them anymore, I was beginning to think I was the only one that didn't mind a slimer on the other end of the line
Very good show, one never tires of watching how fish react in certain situations. Looks like you two might have had sore backs by the end of the day.Keep up the good work as my two boys and myself are looking forward to the next episode
Also liked the part where you where talking about how the panfish hit the lures. Where they may just grab the tail of the bait at first. And also how fast they will suck a lure in and spit it back out. Seen that myself. Those are the days that if you dont have a camera to sight fish these fish your going home frustrated.
Any thoughts on putting them all in as a box set at the end of the year as a season one instead of buying each individually? I think it would be a great gift giving idea.
Very good episode guys...I love all the underwater shots on that clear lake..I used a friend on my dads camera today pike fishing and it was nuts...watchin you guys is costin me alot of $$$ because now i want a camera especially after that episode ....good job guys...Rat
Oh man, it was bitter. I think in the morning the temps were in the low teens with a brisk wind. I don't think we broke 20 degrees although we were able to use the trucks for a wind break which made a big difference.

One question for you though... With so many shrimp present for food why didn't you use them...or did you? Or was the focus to try and put another choice of bait infront of them instead of already what was present.... Something they have not seen??? Like the wax worm!!! Or did the mini mert intend to imitate those schrimp???
Great show with awesome underwater footage as usual!!!!
Well, you guys did 'er again, James!! Outstanding job. Fantastic footage of when those big "toothy critters" came cruisin' by. You know, you've forced me into the 21st Century. Had to go out and get hooked up with a new computer and broadband, because I just couldn't stand to wait for the DVD. Speaking of DVD's, I still want them. These shows are just too good not to have them on DVD. At least I've gotten my fix for now. Let us know when they're available. Thanks, I really appreciate the job your doing.
Quote: One question for you though... With so many shrimp present for food why didn't you use them...or did you?
That is an excellent question... we tried. Scott has tried many times before. In this lake there's so many shrimp the fish hardly pay any attention to "one more in a crowd." I can compare it to trying to catch walleye on the Mississippi River on a live shad. If you've never tried, trust me, you'll starve before a walleye touches one fished on a jig or rig... but they are one of the walleye's primary food sources. In talking with Scott about it these shrimp work well on some other lakes in that same general area because those lakes have a lower population desinty of shrimp. This particular lake was loaded with them.
I hope that makes some kind of sense.

Quote: Your show is the best informational fishing show on TV today!
Thank you. We'll keep trying to put out an ever-improving product.
Quote: That was the first time I have seen reel weeds in action. Do they really help that much?
This was the first time I used the reel weeds so I'm going to answer as a first time user. Scott has used them extensively so his reply can draw more from experience with the product.
Did they work? Yes. We popped the holes, deployed them and checked their positioning with a camera to ensure they were on bottom. Then we went back to fishing our original holes. 10 - 15 minutes later we swiveled the cameras and the reel weeds were loaded with fish and the fish were indeed holed up inside the semi-circle off the tips of the tree branches as we had hoped. Our goal was to concentrate the fish and get them to "come out" from their santuary deep in the tree tips. I had lost a tank bluegill to the tree tops a half hour or so before we dropped the reel weeds and our hope was to get a number of these big gills to come into a more accessible area. With that big muskie hanging around on the edges of these trees all day I assume that our little "wall" of weeds provided a sense of safety... to some degree. Before the reel weeds the gills never ventured far from the tree. After they swam much more freely between the tips of the tree and the reel weeds.
This was my first experience with the product and it was positive. The fish that did cluster around the weeds weren't any more willing to bite... they were still picky little buggers to catch. I will definitely experiment further in the future.

I have to apologize I was on the ice the last 4 days so I am just getting caught up on all the questions. It looks like James has done a good job answering them all. As for the Reel Weeds they do work. It seems like 15 minutes is the key time. It seems to take that long for fish to start relating to them, but yes they work very well
Cal, I have tried just about everything to get big bluegill to bite in lakes with lots of shrimp but shrimp never seems to work. Something a little different, but that still “matches the hatch” is what seems to work best.
I will take some time tonight to get caught up on the rest of the questions and watch the show again
Oh, and yes it was cold and windy when we filmed this but after this weekend and -20 and a 20 MPH wind it is all relative....burr
Outstanding show and again your advice paid off for me fishing on Sunday... On the brightside producing the shows should start getting warmer for you guys soon..
I'm excited to get back on soft water as well. One more ice shoot and then its piggie walleyes on the river and early season smallies. In early March we will be releasing an Upper Mississippi River smallie shoot we did with Steve DeZurik early last summer... just to help the bass guys knock off some of the cabin fever.
