In-Depth Outdoors Pro Staffers Scott Steil and James Holst take to the ice in search of late season pre-spawn pike. Conditions are extreme with frigid temps and a fresh snowfall of over 20 inches.
Another great episode guys. Looks like it was a lot of fun trying to get arond in the snow. Scott must have been a little quicker on the snow though. James, i think the twins might be looking for a new pitcher (some nice throws )
Keep em coming!!
-------------------- Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.
Am I the only one that noticed the new URL for the website shown during the "IDO will be right back"??? Not going to drop any hints... you all are just going to have to watch it again.
Hey James... one other thing. I have to say I really like the "Did you know" pieces that you guys threw in there. I think that adds something good to the show!!! All fisherman like to "learn" something. Whether it adds to their techniques or not... always good stuff to know.
Ok... on the URL thing... looks like you went back to in-depthangling.com at the end there... was that on purpose? or just missed? got me all confused now. Good thing I got this place bookmarked or I would be all over the place.
Looks like you guy's had some serious winter conditions to deal with but it payed off. Thanks for the remarkable job. I noticed on one occasion while lifting a tip-up out that the shaft was able to pivot thus the wingnut tension was not tight, do you normally leave it loose or keep shaft at 90 degrees of the tip-up platform and snug it up? Just wondering if you guy's have played around with that and found one to be better than the other? Thanks again!
No, that wasn't intentional. Pure coincidence. We were in survival mode most of the weekend. On Saturday we had to do rounds every 5 - 10 minutes or all the tipups would freeze in the set position. The bite was VERY lethargic and when you miss opportunities because of the conditions... it compounds the frustrations. I can recall 2 or 3 missed fished on Saturday because the flag was lost in a drift after 10 minutes. The fish would grab the bait and run and the flag wouldn't "fly" due to the weight of the snow. That loose tip-up was just a coincidence. Normally we would have tightened it up but our focus was on tending then sets and staying out ahead of frostbite.
One thing I have to say about fishing in conditions like these... it comes down to the willingness to WORK. I know on day 2 I had to strip off all my outerwear to avoid sweating... and the temps were rediculous cold.
All in all it was a very satisfying bite. We didn't catch many. We didn't catch the hogs. But we left feeling like we came as close as a guy can come to "making" them bite and we poured out every ounce of energy we had to make it happen.
IF you've never hauled an auger and a 5 gallon pail of minnows through 3 - 4 foot drift... you haven't lived. Or fished in South Dakota!

Great observations guys. I do not tighten that screw down all the way on the set-ups because is seems to allow the line to come off the tip-up a little easier when it is really COLD out. When the fish runs, the reel post is able to pivot some and helps the line come off easier. Once it gets above 20 it is pretty much a non issue.
To say this was a tough shoot would be an understatement....Certainly one we will remember.
By the way, watch out around Holst. That guys can throw a snowball My right Kidney still hurts
Just got the time to view episode 3. Another outstanding production. I'm not much of a tip-up fisherman, but really enjoyed watching someone who "knows their stuff" go at it. How soon will the DVD be available for purchase, James?

Welcome to SD!! She can be a brutal pig out there at times. However, that area of the state offers some of the best multispecies angling in the upper midwest. Hopefully you can get back out there for a monster pike episode. I know Waubay has lots of 20lbers.

We try to get one show filmed for every day out. The pike show took two days as most all of the footage from day one was useless.... unless you like watching blowing snow and Scott and I stumbling around in snow drifts.
The conditions that day were brutal.

The next episode is up already..Jet Boat Smallies. We are done on the ice until next year. We should have some excellent shows to start off the ice season
I can't make the sturgeon trip because of my tournaments but I would have liked to make it. Back when I lived up there we would fish them all the time, a blast no doubt
