Rogers report-south end

I finally got caught up enough around here to spend a little time on the lake, I don’t know where everyone is finding this so called 10 inches plus of ice. I managed to mark a trail out 1 mile and I measured the ice with a tape measure about every 100 yards (many times more often than that) and the thickest ice I found was 9 inches with most places measuring 7 and 8 inches, I did find a few spots closer to shore the were just 6 inches. It looks to me at least another week before we can even think about driving anything bigger than my Suzuki on this side of the lake.

Just came back for the lake, things here do not look to bad, still I only found 10 and 11 inches of ice. Starting today I am going to allow small trucks to use our access if they so chose, I know personally it is much easier than dragging a portable house on foot.
We are suppose to get a little more snow tonight and again tomorrow along with some brisk winds, this could help with some of the snow or maybe it could make it worse, we just have to wait and see. Again all I am asking is anyone taking a fish house on to the lake this weekend to please take it off when they leave.

I just came in off the lake and it was just as I thought, the wind yesterday blew just about all of the fluffy snow that was keeping us from making any new ice off of the lake. What is left is hard enough to drive over with my Suzuki with out sinking in, now we can start making some serious ice.
The few places that I did check where still 10 to 12 inches thick but under some of the deeper drifts I found only 8 or 9 inches of ice. I may try plowing some today or tomorrow, depends on how lucky I feel. We will allow smaller trucks to use our access, wheel houses and skid houses are OK, all I ask is if you are not going to use your house for the next day or two to pull it off the lake and put it in the lot, any houses left on the lake at this time will sink like a submarine when the snow drifts pile up around them. (No charge for parking in the lot at this time) I am not going to pull out any private houses until we get a few more inches of ice.

We had quite a bit of traffic considering the poor ice condition at the middle of last week, as usual the fishing was off quite a bit from what it was previous, I always attribute that to the extra noise on the lake. The fishermen that did the best got far away from the center of the activity, I know more would have done so but were unsure of the ice conditions, funny how some fishermen don’t like to be the first one to a new spot this early in the season.
The ice is coming along nicely, with 11 to 13 inches everywhere I looked. I now have a road plowed out 1 ½ miles straight north and I will be plowing some side roads off to the east later in the week, so by next weekend we should have enough ice for just about everyone. I would still wait on putting out the heavier permanent houses until after Christmas, there is a lot of snow on the lake and flooding is still a problem.

Greetings fishermen! A brief update on the conditions here at ROGERS’. Jerry’s road is marked out a mile and a half. At this time we have a good 14” of ice. (1/2 Ton trucks are good to go at this time. The Big One Ton trucks Jerry said should wait a bit.) The lodge is pretty well stocked with bait, tackle, deli sandwiches, pizza, and misc. other “stuff”…
The fish bite since Wednesday has been excellent. We have even been so lucky as to see a couple of crappies, so that in itself was a real bonus.
At this time Jerry and I would like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and the best fishing you can have in 2008.

Greetings fishermen!
First off I must say I am sorry we haven’t updated the website sooner. We have both been really busy (which is good)
Here we are wrapping up 2007. I for one am happy to see Santa has hopped on his sleigh and headed back to the North Pole…
Now for more serious stuff like ice fishing news, road conditions AND how the fish are biting…. Pull behind houses and ½ ton trucks are going out at this time. The main road is in good condition and marked out about 1 ½ miles to 13’ of water. Jerry has 3 out houses out there on the big lake marking some pull off roads. When getting off the main plowed roads just be careful not to get yourself stuck.
As far as the bite goes it is not as good as it was before Christmas, whether it is the noise or the weather OR whatever the reason. The fish are still biting -- just a little spotty. Have to work for them a little more than earlier. The best part is no matter how the fishing is - - you won’t be at work.

Have a safe and happy 2008.

Here it is the very last day of 2007. Last night brought us a little dusting of snow making things look nice and clean to start out the New Year.
As far as the fishing goes, it is still spotty, some are catching - - other are struggling to catch a few. As far as Jerry’s road it is in really nice shape. He has several “get off” roads running off the main road. The snow off the plowed roads is sizable deep.
As far as jigs go some were using green and having some luck.
Guess this is it for this year, have a great new years, most of all be safe!

Greetings Fishermen! Fishing here at ROGERS’ is still somewhat spotty, but as far as I can see the bite today is picking up a little. Some are having some luck with walleye - northern, a few crappie, and a perch here and there.
The past couple days have been absolutely awesome weather. Warm and sunny, far to nice for this time of the year - - we better appreciate it for now, as I hear the weather is suppose to switch to much cooler temps before the week is over.
The ice road on the big lake is still hanging on in great shape. The ice thickness is about 15 to 17 inches in most places. Even with the warm weather the ice road is in awesome shape.

Greetings fishermen! Today’s weather was a cloudy and over cast type of day, surely different than earlier in the week with the days being warm and sunny.
The ice road here at ROGERS’ is still holding on in nice shape, with the ice measuring 15 to 17 inches in most places.
As far as the bite goes many are still fishing about 6 inches off the bottom and having some
luck, using a little red jig tipped with a minnow. We have heard the northern bite has been pretty good lately. All in all I would sum up the fishing as still spotty with some having a little more luck than others.
Have a safe trip to Red Lake this week end.

Finally back to reality, I had close to 20 below zero here this a.m. and it did not seem to warm up much at all during the day, at least not at the propane fill station. Besides firming up the ice a little the cold weather has caused a few cracks in the ice road, a couple of them I am going to keep a close eye on for the next few days, hopefully they do not turn into a pressure ridge.
The walleye fishing has improved a little these past couple of days, again I hope that this is a trend that will continue for the rest of the season. The crappies are still just coming in one or two here and there, along with a bonus pike tossed into the mix.

Greetings fishermen! AND wasn’t this a refreshing type of morning??? My thermometer said -19. For those that spent the night on the lake I’m sure they were glad the wind wasn’t howling….
As far as the bite goes it is still spotty with some catching fish and other just fishing…. Most are still fishing very close to the bottom with some also getting northern action.
The ice road is in good shape with the ice measuring 15 to 17 inches.
For those traveling to Red Lake this weekend have a safe trip.

Looks like we will survive yet another cold weekend here on Upper Red Lake, our main ice road is in excellent shape with lots of side roads plowed off for your convenience.
The fishing the past few days has been fair, with some fishermen catching dozens of walleyes per day while others struggle to catch just enough for a meal.
The crappie fishing again is better than I thought it would be this time of year, several fishermen have been bringing in crappies to show off, mainly just to rub it in because I can’t catch one.

Hey Russ ,
tried to call you last night but no anwser. The fishing has been excellent to poor. I guess it all comes down to location. We are up yo 35 crappies so there are a few left but have not found the mother load yet. My plans were to chase crappies one more year then I have all summer to decide if its worth it next year. I have heard some good reports of crappie but some people can be very hush hush?
The walleye fishing has been spectacular at times and again comes down to location. Again the season has been a challenge as you battle mother nature. She is the boss and my hat is off to her as I have never beat here.

The weather this weekend was just great, too bad the fishing here at ROGERS’ did not equal it. The walleye fishing is still slow, mostly due to the abundance of minnows swimming around in the big lake but the patient fishermen did catch their limits. On the bright side we did see a few more crappies caught this weekend, more than in the past few weeks anyway. We will see later if we can come up with a few crappie photo's from the weekend.

Walleye fishing this past weekend was OK, nothing to brag about, the patient fishermen went home with their limits. A plain hook and minnow fished just off the bottom out fished everything else by far, aggressive jigging seams to spook the fish out of the area.
The crappies still are missing, just one here and there, I am not too sure if there are enough crappies left in this area to even make it worth looking for them but we will keep trying until the ice is to rotten to get on safely.
The past few days we have seen the perch become much more common, this year they actually are large enough to keep, maybe this will be the next big thing here on Upper Red Lake.

The snow and wind sure put a damper on thing around here as soon as the sun comes up I have to get out on the lake and survey the situation, I am sure that I will spend quite a bit of time today getting some of our fishermen off of the lake.
I meant to do this a couple of days ago but things have been kind of crazy around here and I could not find time to clarify just what I meant about the crappie fishing when I said that it was not worth the effort to even look for them. What I said was just my opinion, I was not speaking for the whole lake, what I put in my fishing report is just what I see with my own eyes here at ROGERS’. There are other resorts that are doing just fine catching crappies (some of them very close to here) so if I offended anyone I apologize.

Ice conditions are great, 18 to 22 inches on the average, no cracks or pressure ridges to deal with, so far. We've opened up all of the roads from over the weekend and everything is in excellent shape, but the drifts are getting deeper. A few of you that were not here over the weekend should check on your fish houses soon, they may be in danger of flooding.
Fishing is slowly improving; the walleye bite should be pretty good by the end of the season also I think we are going to see the perch picking up more over the next couple weeks, as soon as the weather warms up we should get out and do some scouting for them. I still do not think we are going to see much of a rush for the Upper Red Lake slab crappies, I still believe that they are just about played out for our lifetime. If you watch where you are going you can still get around without getting into to much trouble. Even after the storm we still have very good access to many of the good fishing spots.

With all of the snow plowing and fish house moving the past few days I could not seem to find time to fit in a fishing report, for that I apologize.
The roads are in good shape just somewhat narrower in places than they were a week ago, hopefully this is the last of the sub zero weather for the rest of the year. The forecast is for warming temps for the last weekend of walleye fishing season here on Upper Red Lake.
The fishing this past week was slow for most, just enough walleyes to keep things interesting with a crappie tossed in every once in a while for good measure, hopefully with the warming temps the fishing will improve for this the last weekend.
There are a few fish houses out there that may have a problem, with the snow drifts around some of them almost roof high there could be some flooding, If you think that your house could be one of these give me a call and I will let you know if yours is on the list.
With walleye season ending and March 15th fast approaching Joani is starting a list here at the lodge of fish houses that are ready to come off and go into storage, so if you are interested in placing your fish house into storage here at ROGERS’ call Joani and let her know.

Quick question with the road conditions is it possible to get around with 2wd or do you have to have 4wd or ATV? I am heading up and only have a 2wd vehicle thanks,

It surely looks a lot different out there with most all of the fish houses pulled back to shore, this fishing season sure seemed short compared to the past years when we had the big “crappie explosion”. The big schools of slab crappies may be just a memory for most of us but as seen in this weekends photos there are still a few left out there to catch.
The access will remain open until the ice is unsafe for travel; the lodge will no longer be open except on weekends and even then the hours will be cut short. I will continue to maintain a few of the main roads on the lake as long as it is still profitable, if there is no one here when you arrive please use the pay b

It has been very quiet around here since last Friday, just a few die hard crappie fishermen each day and even they are beginning to disappear. The crappies have been few and far between with only the lucky fisherman catching more than 1 or 2.
I have about 20 fish houses left to remove from the big lake and after that we should be just about done for the season. Remember we have only 10 days left before the few remaining fish houses have to come off the lake.

With just a couple of crappies being caught here and there it has been very difficult finding enough fishermen to pay for gas to keep the roads plowed. I have Only 4 more fish houses left to remove from the lake and then I will be done plowing roads for this season.
The access will remain open to anyone who wants to look for a few more crappies until the ice is unsafe for travel; the lodge will no longer be open except on weekends and even then the hours will be cut short. If there is no one here when you arrive please use the pay box.

The access and ice road are still in very good shape, this is due to the fact that we have had just a couple of fishermen out there in the past couple of weeks. If anyone would like to give it a try be my guest, if there is no one here when you arrive please use the pay box, the lodge is closed and will remain so until May so don't forget to bring bait.
I think Joani and I are going to call it quits for the winter and take a few days off before putting all of the winter stuff put away
