Fish Taxidermy Mounts Recently Finished

#611705 - 12/21/07 04:55 PM

Thought I'd put some recently finished Fish Mounts here on the General Disc forum...
Enjoy..
Jack..

This first Walleye is Jason Halfens (IDA Pro Staff) 29 3/4 incher from a Mille Lacs tournament that didn't survive.
The added Perch was his idea, and think it finished off his mount quite nicely.

This Walleye was caught by Jason Bongers on Mille Lacs last December while ice fishing. It measured just 28 1/4 inches but has a very full body and wide girth.
Just an awesome looking Walleye, Congrats Jason B.

This 30 1/2 inch, over 10 pound Walleye was caught by friend Roger from my fishing club, in South Dakota during April. He really thought he had on a BIG Norhern til he finally saw the fish.
Great fish Roger..

This Walleye was caught by Mark T. with brother-in-law Jim (LM mount) on Green Lake near Spicer, MN during the Summer.
This fish went over 30 inches and 10 pounds, and is just an awesome, wide, deep bodied fish, especially for a Summer fish.
Congratulations Mark.

Jack,

would appreciate your response to this person's question. My experience with replica's has been mixed. Great crappie replica's, a nice smallie replica and a poor 20 pound northern replica.

None of the fish were measured; I just provided the taxidermist with pictures.

Your comments regarding replica's would be appreciated.

Re: Fish Taxidermy Mounts Recently Finished

Kirt and Frivers,
I'll try and add a few comments about Replicas.
There are quite a few companies making fish replicas, and in the last 20 years, the progress to real quality bodies has been quite good.
There are some companies selling very poor quality inexpensive bodies, that requires a lot of fiberglass work, finishing work, and painting. And the overall results looks pretty poor. I have found 2 companies who have excellent replica bodies, good head and mouth detail, and scale definition. These bodies are also very expensive, does require some finishing work, and still painting. but the overall quality starts with a quality replica body.

With the mounted fish I've shown above. These are real fish skin mounts over a hand carved body, that I carve myself. I started my fish Taxidermy 30 years ago, and that's how I learned, by Hand Carving. There are NO ripples, bumps, bulges, pockets anywhere on the skins. The same can be said by comparing cheap replica bodies to quality replica bodies, there really is a huge difference in the finished fish.
For the more popular gamefish, different positions are available for just about each inch of length up the scale.
Hope that answers a couple of questions.
Thanks,
Jack..

These are some of the Crappies and Bluegills that I did for IDA Pro Staffer Derek Johnston (ten total). He will be putting these in his office on an entire wall, with driftwood and foliage, and I think over an underwater scene wallpaper. I hope Derek will post a few pics of his finished wall.
thanks Derek,

My dog when she was a puppy got ahold of my 1.5 pound crappie I had mounted years ago and now it does not have a head. Is there anyways to fix this or what do I do? Write it off? Maybe a replica?

If I were to catch a fish which I would like to get mounted, how would I care for it? How do I wrap it up and freeze it? How do I keep the fish at it's best?

Re: Fish Taxidermy Mounts Recently Finished

That's a great question, I know Jack will chime in with some tips.

From my own personal experience, getting a fish to the taxidermist as quickly as possible is job #1. I had that fish in Jack's hands around 24 hours after I caught it. I had it packed in ice, wrapped in an old shirt to keep the fins pinned up against the body to keep then from getting damaged.

EDIT: Let me add that I couldn't be happier with Jack's work. This summer, I plan to have my daughter's first walleye mounted. She hasn't caught it yet, but when she does, Jack will be getting another call from me.

Re: Fish Taxidermy Mounts Recently Finished

#612074 - 12/23/07 12:21 AM

Thank-you for ALL the very nice comments..

SJDobie: as far a fixing your Crappie, I am pretty sure that fiberglass heads are available for different species, that can be molded onto the body, any other fix up or repair is done, and the whole fish is then repainted, when they are done, you can not really tell it's not the real thing.
Let me know if you would like me to check on it.

Chomps: Great question, and thanks for asking.
First of all, DO NOT CUT THE FISH IN ANY WAY, DO NOT gut it out, and leave the gills in the head. I keep the heads fully intact on all game fish, the real gills, gill rakers, and tongue are retained in the head, for the most realistic and lifelike as possible.
The best thing to do for the fish, is to keep it cold and fresh like in a plastic garbage bag and on ice, and bring it over.

If you are on vacation or if it will be a couple of days, then you should freeze the fish. DO NOT put the fish in newspaper at ALL. Roll the fish up in a large plastic garbage bag, and as you roll it, squeeze out as much air as possible and freeze. Lay the fish flat in a freezer. the fins will be fine, except for the tail, dont' throw hamburger packs etc on top of the fish or tail end.
For long term freezing(over 4 months), first roll the fish up in a towel, get it soaking wet. then do the same rolling it up in a g.bag..
thanks,
Jack.

Jack, Thanks for a great job on my bass. This fish was caught in 15 inches of water, less than 20ft from shore.
While I was fising from shore, on a mimic minnow plastic
body with a 3/32- 3X jig. My wife was really happy have it in my den.
My bother-in-law was really proud of the work you done on the walleye. Mark is looking forward to show this fine catch to his friends and family. He E-mailed a photo of the fish to his parents and sister in Africa.
Speaking of Africa I'm looking forward to my trip this summer, to see my sister-in-law and go fishing. She is going to get a guide to show me around to some of the better fishing spots. Maybe me could mount some of them?
Jack Thank you for a great job.

Jack,

Outstanding work on the fish mounts. You really do quality work. Still havn't cracked the 10lb mark for a walleye but when I do, I'd love one for the wall in my office. Until then, they're all going back in the drink.
In the meantime, looks like quite a few others are keeping you busy. Great Job Dave

These are the 2 Smallmouth I did for Frank (Rod-man) in Kasson.
There is a real neat story Frank tells of fishing with his brother-in-law, Troy, in catching these fish.
The Big Smallie is over 21 inches, and 5 1/2 pounds, and the slightly smaller one is 20 inches. Awesome Fish, Frank.

I also measured some of his Deer racks, and his father-in-laws Buck will make the next Mn Record Book.
I enjoyed the visit, Frank.
Thanks,
Jack..
