Strongest & Weakest Technics

#630809 - 02/01/08 10:42 AM

I know we are all great fishermen, but I'm wondering what guy's would think are there best go to technic & what they would thinks is there weakest or worst technic. Also what they feel comfortable with but would need improvement on.

Srongest Technic- trolling any kind & dragging & pitching plactics

Needs imporving- pitch cranks to wingies
Weakest Technic- live bait rigging spinners

My strongest area would be livebait rigging and jigging. I love to use both of those techniques.
My weakest techniques would be casting cranks
My good area but need to improve on would be trolling open water. I have improved but need to flatten out the edges a bit more.

As everyone we are good at some techniques and not so good at others but to be totally honest we could all learn a trick or two and improve even at our best techniques!

I love trolling anything. Longlining. Leadcore. 3-ways. Spinners. Love it all.

I am perfectly comfortable with a jig stick. Vertical, pitching, dragging, etc.

I strongly dislike livebait rigging. Strongly.

This year, I've decided to work on my open water trolling. Suspended piggies, watch out!

Strengths: Anything to do with jigs in rivers, trolling anywhere, livebait rigging w/ 3ways, livebait rigging w/ sliding sinkers in current, casting cranks.

Weaknesses: lindy rigging in lakes. I'm bored in 5 minutes so I'll never be strong in this area. Slip bobbers.

Every year i sit down and write out goals for which techniques i need to work on.

Best: Live bait presentations, finesse rigging and jigging.

Mediocre: Trolling cranks

Worst: Fishing plastics

Curious to learn: Planar boards

Another thing i'm going to try and learn more about are my electronics. There is a wealth of information to be gathered from these, between my hand held GPS, Sonar/GPS unit, i can really improve my fishing!

my strongest technique I'm a masterbaiter

ok ok that was almost bad.....best at leadcore and longline trolling

needs improving baitcasting operation

weakest as far as feel jigging in deep water

Can I claim strengths and weaknesses if I'm world reknown for NOT catching walleyes?

Strengths....Bull headed determination. Cold, hot, rain, bugs, tuna boats, I don't care. Keep fishin'!

Weaknesses: The River. Rivers are so different than lakes it's amazing. I have a ton of stuff to learn yet.

Good question!

Strengths=casting cranks, vertical jigging, and getting better at the pitching thing.
Weakness= live bait rigging, and especially northern Minnesota clear water lakes. I've been going up for a week for years, and still haven't figured the walleyes out up there

I'd say we have a commedian in our midst

As far as I can say I probabally don't give my self enough credit, But Here is what I feel I'm good with.

The Good Pitching Plastics, Cranks, and Jigging live Bait.

The Bad I have alot to learn in the above mentioned as far as boat position with how it relates to wingdams, very frustrating but I love the hard Thud of a walleye smacking a crank or jig as your reeling it off the face of a dam.

The Ugly I like trolling but have alot to learn as far asboat control. I have to be fishing with somone so I can play passenger rather than run the rig As I mentioned I am a student of the river and I'll never say I know it all cause I'm slowly picking up the techniques.

I'd have to say my strengths are trolling and casting cranks and pitching.

I'd say my weaknesses are slip bobber and anything with weed walleyes.

My wife says my weakness is getting home from fishing on time.

I'd say I am best at corking, and can drag a mean Lindy Rig.

Weakest would have to be trolling boards and pitching cranks. Not that I can't do it, but I don't enjoy it as much as sitting or drifting.

Strengths: Rivers & Reservoirs – At least 90% or more of my time is spent on these types of waters.

Boat control – it’s impossible to be really good at anything without becoming fluent in boat control first!

Jigging – live bait or plastics, vertical, dragging & casting.
(would love to get more time casting as its one of my favorites)

Trolling - bottom bouncers with live bait or plastics.
Crank baits suspended or on bottom.
Crawler harnesses behind bottom bouncers.

Vertical blading – Pretty good at vertical jigging blades. Not so good at casting them.

Wader fishing at night – Casting suspended crank-baits and jig/plastic combos in the spring & fall especially. Wish I could find the time and energy to do this as often as I used to!

Weaknesses: Natural lakes – Just don’t get a lot of time fishing them.

Live bait rigging – Not horrible at it, but needs improvement!

Lead core – Needs work and I plan on giving it a lot of attention this year.

Casting blade baits – Another one that’s going to get some serious attention this coming year.

Slip bobbering – I can do it but am not to crazy about it and don’t use it very often.

Sorry about the format of this reply. I did it in “Word” so that I could save it and refer back to it from time to time.

Good subject!

I would consider my strengths to be all presentations that can be used on the river to catch walleyes except for the following.

Weakest to non existent for me would be lead line, hand-lining, planer boards in the river, and any kind of live bait fishing on a lake that is not right on the bank .

Strengths: Vertical Jigging, dragging, crawler harnesses on bouncers, long line trolling, casting cranks, in that order.

Needs work: planer boards, rigging, pitching plastics in rivers, vertical jigging blade baits.

Pathetic at best: pitching blades, reading big rivers and figuring out where to spend my time, finding fish mid summer in deep natural lakes.

Great subject.

Strengths: Dragging, pitching, jigging plastics, pitching blade baits. I give the credit here to James, Dustin, Deezee, MikeW, Dean, IDO, and St. Croix rods.

Needs work: 3-waying live bait or stickbaits, trolling with boards, live bait fishing in general.

Cluless: Leadcore, handlining.

Strongest: Rig fishing with any type of live bait
More work needed: Jig fishing
Weakest: Crankbait-presentation needs improving

Least favorite: Slip Bobber fishing-no patience for this type however I do it to catch big fish on real hard hit spots when alone-never in a crowd!!!!!!!

Great post!

Strengths; Pitching plastics and cranks for smallies and walleyes in rivers, trolling cranks open water.

Weakness or dislikes; Livebait rigging and pulling livebait spinner rigs, slip bobbers.....

Its obvious for most all of us how much confidence techniques come into play day in and day out on each outing. Figure the % of time you spend each day fishing your favorite technique before making a switch!

Strongest - Casting Cranks, crank trolling sloughs, Open water trolling, harnesses, vertical jigging,

Competent but not a master - leadcore (1 year into it and hooked), live bait rigging, slip bobbering

Weakest - plastics (I run cranks so much I just don't spend much time with plastics) both dragging and pitching.

strengths: Contour trolling, lead, shallow water trolling, pitching cranks, corks, pitching jigs,

We are talking walleyes here...right?

Strongest...anchoring with live bait...and I did once pull a mean three way on the St Croix.

Weakest...pretty much everything else. I do get this urge this time of year to learn pitching blades. I've always stayed away from them because I thought most fish were snagged...since I've be educated about blades and pitching them they sound interesting. Since the best P4 bite has been off of blades this last week...my urge has been rekindled.

Not ripping on the guys that only fish lakes...but since I've "discovered" the river... I've lost interest in them for open water fishing. Just too many different and larger fish in a river system.

strongest - pitching plastics, crank baits and trolling (long line).
moderate - dragging
weakest - I have no patience so I'm a terrible slip bobber guy unless there is plenty to drink and people to talk to, not very good at rigging or trolling spinners either.

Strengths...
Pitching/casting/jigging...plastics,blades, cranks etc...
Vertical jigging w blades or plastics, and drfiting light jigs tipped with live bait.
I dont like trolling as much but am well versed in the techniques...

Weakness...Like James, slip bobbering and dead sticking...don't have the patience

My Best presentation is jigging, dragging, basically anything with a jig. I feel confident when using a jig.

I am ok with trolling cranks and harnesses and am average with Slip Bobbers. Still learning the ins and outs of each of these techniques.

I am not proficient with 3 way rigs or Lindy Rigs. I guess I just haven't tried them enough to get good at it.

I plan to learn more about Planer boards and using 3 way rigs and Lindy Rigs
