Fishing report?

#633364 - 02/07/08 08:08 AM

Anyone been out lately on Wissota? I'm looking to head out next Wednesday night for my first ice fishing of the season (and probably my only time)! Just looking to see if the eyes are biting! Thanks!

I made it out today for what I thought was going to be a great walleye day. It could not have been any more perfect. We were heading out to the zone by four wheeler and as we passed some other anglers we saw one guy fighting a small eye and a few others out on the ice. This was going to pan out to be a good day, I could feel it. We popped a few holes and no longer did we get set up and BANG! One flag is up with a nice slot fish to show for our 5 minutes of effort. No sooner did I get that one back down the hole and BANG! There is another flag. Hit and a miss. Well I missed, the fish got my minnow. This is not a fluke at this point we are going to get into the fish today. Every hole we marked fish and have not had time to even sit down yet and two flags had popped. The excitement builds for flag number three………….. and builds, and builds, and builds. Long story short flag three never happened. Four more hours of ice time jigging and watching eyes (sniffers) come up and look before they take off never to be seen again. Should have been out for the mid day bite by the looks of it.

Brought the daughter out on Wissota tonight. Nice night, kind of windy. Not too much happening where we were fishing. Couple of bass, some small eyes. Have to start hitting her good again next week.

Was kind of slow on the big W this morning, with grey skies and strong easterly winds, but I did manage to wrangle up a nice mixed bag of crappies, walleyes, pike, and a couple of fat smallies. Red and white tube jigs worked best up in the river.

Hit Wissota and got into some smallies today, they were sitting right on the ledges. Would have loved to stay longer, but had to come home. May go try it again later tonight. Maybe Wissota, maybe not.

Thanks Dartman, she is a little fishing machine! Her grandma just bought her a tee shirt up in Canada that reads "Dontcha wish your girlfriend could fish like me?" Training the youngest the same way!

Hit Wissota again last night for a few hours of some smallie fishing, and we did quite well, boating 40 or better. Most were around 10-12 inches, but we did boat a few between 15 and 17. Pictures turned out kind of fuzzy, probably because I didn't use my flash.

Yep, it was calm again today, too bad I had to leave the lake

I decided to to go chase some cats this morning for the first time all year (I think?). They did not cooperate! I meant to go pick up some sucker minnows last night, and I completely forgot about it. I used night crawlers, fish flavored power bait, and red catfish Gulp bait. No cats! But... the smallmouth were hitting both the Gulp, and the crawlers! As a matter of fact, the smallmouth actually became kind of a nuisance! I know what I have just spoken is complete blasphemy, but man did I want to get into some cats. So, when you can't beat em, join em. I ended up fishing for the bronzebacks, and caught some real beauties. Didn't take any pics today though, my only fishing partner was the dog, and I wasn't about to let him take pics!

I hit Wissota this morning after work. Beautiful morning. Got a limit of eyes no problem. The cats, well, they were a problem! Currents seemed a bit fast. Did get one about 5 lbs (mmm catfish nuggests!). And the smallmouth were their usual selves, hiiting everything you threw at them. Today my choice was a chartreuse and white tube jig. I don't think color would have made a difference.

Brought a couple of clients out on Wissota last night. We targetted largemouth and smallmouth. We started out looking for largemouth at one of my holes. They were there but they were finicky. Our weapon of choice was Texas rigged Power Worms. We only managed a couple. I couldn't fish my main largemouth spot beacuse boat traffic was just terrible. After about an hour of chasing the green, we moved to the bronze, and that put a smile right on their faces! The smallies were still on fire when they had to go. After they left I went back out targeting walleyes, I only had an hour of daylight. Their food of choice on this night was a #5 Firetiger JSR. Got 7 on that, no overs tonight, though. I really miss being able to fish during the week.

Back out on Wissota this morning with the girls to wrangle up some walleyes. Like yesterday the action was good early, and died out around 8 am. We trolled shad raps all morning, and boated around 20 walleyes. 13 of those fish were in the slot, the biggest being a 1/4" under 18. If we were not cathcing slot fish, we were catching itty bitty fish! As a matter of fact, we only had one legal fish I would have kept, unlike yesterday. Which was all the eater fish you wanted.

I trolled cranks on Wissota again this morning, and I had a limited time to do it. I started out in my usual walleye hotspot, and right away, not surprisingly, I was into some eyes. I only trolled for an hour and caught about 9 or 10, and once again, the slot eyes were hungry! About 6:30 I quit with limit of eaters, and headed up the river for cats. All I had to fish em with were some crawlers and some power bait. I had a double right away, in which I landed one fiddler, and lost the other. That was it cat-wise. I called it good about 8 am. Pleasant day on the water.
