With freezing cold temps and windy days you would think that the fish wouldn’t be biting, but to our surprise the bite was awesome. I had the opportunity to meet up with Jonny Petrowski with Outdoors with Jonny P to fish these crappies and walleyes here on Upper Red Lake.
We had the day all planned till the weather changed and were forced to fish inside the big shack from Waskish Minnow Station. Let me tell you, these houses on the ice were huge 16X24, lots of room to move around, plus the fish were biting. We were fishing in about 12 feet of water with jigging spoons, demons and plain hooks. These baits all caught fish, but the plain hook seemed to work the best. It seemed as though the walleyes would come in and look at the jigging spoon and then see the minnow swimming around and crush it.
We were able to make it outside for a little while, but the cold temps made it really hard on the cameras, so we were forced to head back in. Since the water is a little more murky on Red Lake, rattling baits seem to work a little better than no rattle. Over all it was a great time up on Upper Red Lake and the fishing was awesome, couldn’t ask for a better day.
Just curious. I see in the video he has the depth finder sensor way below the ice line. is that normal? I was not listening to sound. but have always been told to have that as even as possible with the bottom of the ice.

Bronco- I belive with Luke, I try and set it just below the bottom of the ice. Gives you a bigger cone and easier to get out of the hole (unless you are catching a bunch of Evelyn's) inside joke.
Great point both Luke and John. Normally I have my transducer right below the ice, but since i was always moving my transducer from one hole to the other I needed a little extra cord to bounce between. We hit that bite just perfect, I almost got to the point were you couldn't have two rods down. Thanks for watching guys, I greatly appreciate it!

Haney, The best time get those crappies is more into March. The walleye bite always seems to be good, the lake is just filled with walleyes. I can't wait for another 3 years when a lot of those walleyes will be monsters.
We ended up catching 7 crappies, most came while we were sleeping. The biggest for the trip was 16 1/4" Jack, You should have a lot better crappie action come march. In Theory!
