Pool 2 Walleye Fishing 3.22.08

by Lip Ripper on 03/24/2008
My personal river best @ 8.5lbs
Here is a quick P2 Update. Last Saturday I jumped in the boat with John 23 from the site. This is the 2nd time John and I have fished together and I was pumped after seeing all the reports on river Walleye fishing the past week or so here on In-Depth Outdoors. Spring Walleye fishing is just something my schedule does not permit me to do very often. So thinking the timing was just about right, I met John down at the ramp on a snowy, cold March morning. We were greeted with temps in the mid 20’s and about 3-4” of fresh snow. This made for a quite adventurous boat launch that morning.

One of John's biggest of the day.
We targeted most of our day around the confluence up and down river from that. Our main presentation was plastics and jig heads from B-FISH-N TACKLE. We dragged, vertically fished and pitched them on sand flats, current breaks, mud lines, small wing dams and eddies. It seemed that the preferred color of the day was Chanteuse Pepper and K-Grubs probably took the most fish along with ringworms coming on strong late. The Oyster Shell color also held its own at times.

My 19.5" Rough Fish
Again due to my limited time on the river, my personal best was not all the high and was around the 25” mark. So John and I were both determined for me to beat that and beat it I did numerous times. Overall the bite was a little slow for us, but John’s experience and our persistence paid off. I’m guessing the front with the snow had the eyes a little off their feeding frenzy of the few days before. We had caught saugers and eyes through out the day, when I had a made a cast near a current break, I got bit, and set the hook. When all of a sudden this fish was coming to the surface where I had set the hook. It jumped out of the water 2 times before finding it’s way to the bottom of the net. Low and behold this smallie was a pretty decent smallie in any water, much less Pool 2. The fish taped out @ 19.5” and a few pics and back it went. Late in the day we found an area holding quite a few fish and I think the 2 biggest fish of the day came from this small but fertile location. Including my personal best river walleye @ 27” & 8.5 lbs that fell victim to a 1/8 oz H20 precision jig tipped with a chartreuse pepper ringworm that was pitched to a shoreline break. It was a great way for us to end a long day by boating 5 fish in just a few minute time span.

My first of the day! (ps: Yes Blue, that is mono on my reel.)
I would like to give a HUGE thanks to John for sharing his boat and putting me on some dandy fish. I’m also looking forward to doing it again. I’m still in search of my 10 lb River Eye, but hopefully I can get out a few more times to Pool 2 and perhaps Pool 4 before the spawn to drop da on some of dem’ fat bottom girls. This lake fisherman is definitley geting the hang of and liking this River fishing thing. Until next time be safe and you do not have to wait until opener to get some good open water fishing in.

Yes! I need to get back down there Mike!

It was a blast being out on Open Water again, even if the eyes on my rod were freezing for half the day. John helped me add a few more techniques and ideas to my arsenal!

We worked hard for those fish, that's for sure. I think this weather has them in a funk. It seems like there are a few short feeding windows and the fish are in a neutral-negative mood the rest of the time. But persistence pays off. Thanks for sticking with it through a long day, Rob!! I'm looking forward to our next trip.
