James Holst and I were up on Rainy the last 3 days and had some fantastic fishing. Water clairty remains very good at a little over 2 foot, water levels appear to be steady yet and very fishable currents.
The Frontier and Birchdale ramps are plowed out and in great shape. We spent our last 3 days pitchign plastics down between Frontier and Clementson. THe midday midriver flat fishing was fantastic with lots of fish including plenty of 25"-29" to go around!
Its been 10 years since I was up on the Rainy and quickly reminded myself of why I stopped making it a every year trip. 5/16th oz BFT Chart/Orange Precision jigheads on Chart/Pepper and Chart/Orange core ringworms overwhelmingly took the bulk if not all of our fish over the 3 days. We opted to pitch plastics the entire trips with no minnows aboard and had an absolute blast doing.
I am sitting here extremely envious of anyone heading up there this week. You are instore for osme great fishing! Good luck

My 2 sons, and 2 friends fished this past w.e. through monday. We once again experienced great nos and several fish in the 22-26 in range with a handful over the 26" mark. Were You guys fishing in a G3? My sons thought You may have passed us Monday the 7th between the church and big log home that sits on the Mn side.

Crowds get to you, or is it the drive?

Steve, we saw you at a few different spots on Tuesday chasing the big girls down the river. One of the guys in my boat was enjoying the group between us as they were netting 9" sauger. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, you couldn't forget my buddy- 280 lbs, bomber hat, porn style shades, and a reflective style saftey coat.
By the way, the BFT 3/8 heads with ringies worked great on both walleye's and a 44" foul hooked in the tail Sturgeon. 2 days fishing, 3 guys , approx 250 walleyes = Great Times .

This is my 3rd year missing this trip after a 10 year run, but next week will be my 3rd Sturgeon Excursion
Every fisherperson should make this trip at least once to experience it.

Steve is saying it was good to be back. The crowds were not bad at all... we just fished away from the boats most of the time. Much better than Red Wing in my opinion... there's a lot of river miles out there to fish.

Tim, Sorry, I did not mean for that to read that way. I typed this all up so quickly before I ran off to a meeting and it got a little sloppy! (James needs to install spellcheck for this antsy typers!)
I meant to say that I cannot believe I have gone without it for 10 years. It was so much fun....even the 14" walleyes! I would like to get back into this tradition again now that I do not go out to Lake Erie every spring! I sure miss the Rainy! We made the decision to get on the water during the week versus planning it around a long weekend to avoid some of the masses. It was actually very nice at the ramps as well as having plenty of water to run off to. As James mentioned, with this much water we were able to get away from some of the boat traffic during midday at times to take advantage of some active migrating fish.

I think I remember seeing you guys down by the big log cabin? I wish I had the time to get a one last hurray up there this weekend! Good luck to all! Well that cuts the population down by about

Great Fishing Steve!!!
Talked to James the otherday, and he mentioned as well you boys had sore wrists from the action!!!!
I'm sure the Rainy Eyes were a bit taken back with the "Ring Worms" Not used much up here by the local fisherman or guides. I prefer to use Black Smelt gulp or shiner imitations for plastic presentations. I'll have to give the Ring worms some water time this year.
FYI although the spring bite gets the attention rumor has it we have unequalled fall bites as well both lake and river!!! Wait until most are chasing feathered friends in the woods, and then come on back up!!! Awesome wings and walleyes weekend for the boys.
Last year my fishing partner and myself were landing fish with bare fireball jigs!!! Yep that is good fishing!!! Funny thing is if you would miss a fish they would come right back and smack it again. Really looking forward to your show, and Thanks from Borderland on producing a quality production of Rainy River Walleye Fishing.
Heres to all enjoying the resource, getting along on the water, and effective CPR practices on those Gi-Normous females!!!

Daze,
I've heard the fall bite can be great. Do you feel the size of fish in the fall is anything like the spring?? How about numbers? I'd much rather come up when there is a little less traffic.

Hey Kooty,
Eyes are chasing shiners during the fall. Later you get into the fall the bigger fish that will be showing up. When you start seeing Orange coveralls in 12 foot wooden boats it's time to fish. I wouldn't say that you get into as big of number of big fish, but make no mistake about the fact there are MANY Big fish being caught. Tough to compete with a spawn as far as drawing in the Big Girls. Last fall we slipped out for about 2 hours in the evening landing nothing short of 75 walleyes. Of those fish they were predominately 16-21 inches. few bigger fish, and no smaller ones. Nice thing in my mind is that yes the crowds are smaller, and it is FALL!!!! Arguably my favorite weather for fishing. Beautiful scenery, Waterfowl, small crowds.... Another nice thing is that the fish are all over, and there is NO NEED to fish in combat fashion boat to boat/ shoulder to shoulder. Lots of river to cover, and lots of willing walleyes.
The other thing is that I often have a few groups that do a combo weekend of fishing, grouse hunting and Waterfowl hunting. I'm not sure if it gets any better than that!
