Walleyes And Crappies

#663689 - 04/17/08 08:23 PM

I'm planning on going fishing tmw since we have tmw off from school. Are the walleyes still hitting from by dam? Where is the best spot to go to try to catch a few crappie?

Will you be fishing from shore or a boat?

Bank or small boat for coves.

Not hearing what the water temp is up there, I bet you'll start seeing some of those eyes moving out to postspawn areas. Not a big number, I bet, and you'll probably have to work for em. But the crappies.....I bet it's a bit cold yet for them to be moving up into spawning areas. That being said, I think you might concentrate on the drops, the first drops, outside the spawning areas. You can still reach a lot of these areas with a small boat as they are the mouths of coves. Don't be surprised to see some of them suspended. Tie two jigs to your line 2-3' apart and you should be able to catch some, maybe even a few walleyes there too. Personally, I wouldn't be too aggressive jigging, but I've been kicked around a few times by guys who do that, too. Bottom line: be versatile, with colors, depths, actions. I do hope this helps, let us know how you do.

If you're luckier than I am you might get something at the inlet too. Might be a walleye or two in there.

The forcast is calling for 70 tomorrow with 5-10 MPH winds. That is awful tempting for me to skip turkey hunting tomorrow and head up there.

If your looking for crappie . Look in front of dam with small jig &minnow or 1 to 1 1/2 in twister tail. Slow as possible retrieve. Seen a lot of nice crappie come right off the docks at the traide wind marina. In that bay there is a lot of sunken tree piles and tire beds. Try those to.
Right across from the last boat dock north is a lot of sunken tree piles mostly with in casting distance of the cabin's dock .
If your looking for walleye go deeper.Depending on the water temp. How deep and how slow. Try drifting crawler in deep water real slow then keep going shallower till you find them. They my still be in front of the dam in deep water. Still spawning or just recuperating from the spawn. If that is the case. The big ones will be very hard to catch. The males should be more active and easier to find. Good Luck (wish i could go.)

I think I will be the only one in the boat in the morning, so if you are up there just wave and you can hop in
