Chetek chain

#664343 - 04/20/08 07:56 PM

The time for fishing is near. Ten Mile is now about 80% open, the frogs are croaking, and the ducks are mating. I even seen an eagle with a walleye in it's grips. After checking around the chain today it looks like the rest of the lakes should be opening this week, they are all very dark & the narrows are starting to open. There was a boat out fishing this afternoon however I did not see them bring anything in.

I just drove past Chetek and it is starting to open . There is open water on the west end & a large swath going from east to west down the center. you can also see the ice line progressing down the straight from Ten Mile. Every thing should be open by this weekend with the forcast for thunderstorms slated for tomorrow. I will try & check the other lakes in the system on my way home from work tomorrow & will post when I get home.

The lakes are all open. I found a few places that had some busted up ice floating on the windswept sides of some of the bays, and some chunks about 30 ft in diameter floating around. But for the most part ice free. I did not see anywhere that you could not get to by boat.

I never made it out in the boat over the weekend .
I was in the process of moving to our summer place on the creek. The opener was good for me however, I was able to nail a fiew eye's after dark about 100 yds from my front door. The best day so far was tuesday after work before the rain hit. I managed to get 2 keepers & about 20 small ones. The crappies are also starting to show up, Me and the wife managed to get enough for a couple of meals last night.

I was just out on the Chetek Chain this morning, and it's all of the bluegills and crappies you want! The crappies weren't huge, but the numbers were. We also got into some nice gills. Throw in some little perch, a fat largemouth, and a scrappy pike for a decent mixed bag. All fish were caught on tube jigs or minnows, and then released.

Just got back from doing a guide job on the Chetek chain, and it is still all of the bluegills and crappies you want. Lots of smaller ones, but a blast indeed. With the holiday weekend our best results came in the lower traffic areas. Flirty girty with a waxie or a tube jig, fish after fish. All fish released, I will post the pics later

Fished Ten Mile & Chetek yesterday. Drifted both lakes and all that was biting were small crapies & gills. Did manage to pick up 3 nice gills on ten mile that all went back. Then started to troll crank baits on chetek and the wife pulled in a 29" pike. Still waiting for the cooler water so the bigger ones will start feeding but we did manage to boat about 60 fish between the both of us and the wife had fun.

Just a note for anyone that uses a pontoon or a longer boat on the chain. Today we went to take out our pontoon at the launch by the Pokegama Inn. When my wife backed down the ramp the tires on the trailer dropped off the end of the ramp & when she tried to pull ahead the truck would not move. I docked the pontoon & tried myself with no luck. I called a friend & we hooked a chain up to the front of mine and ended up snaping the ball off of my truck. It ended up costing me $160 to get a tow truck to lift the trailer out of the lake.
This will be the last time I use this ramp. It serves me right for trying to use a ramp that I have never used before. The moral of the story is avoid using that ramp unless you have a short trailer.
