Topwaters! Chug bugs early and late in the day over the tops of the reefs has to be tops for me.

Yep, No question topwater is the most exciting way to catch them. Nothing like that "explosion"!

Until 2 years ago I had never caught anything but a Walleye on Mille Lacs, except for an eelpout. My Dad and I decided 2 years ago to try the smallies out, we are now hooked as well.
I put on a 3/0 hook and will try the top water with a Sizmic Toad or Ribot Frog.
If they aren't coming up it's time to start jigging. I remove the Frog and put on a Zoom Super Fluke. I Target big rocks and let the Fluke drop to the bottom. If the line doesn't start running give it a lift, if no fish repeat.
My Dad does very well with tube jigs on windy days bringing them back over the rocks.
Where are you on the lake?

Prime territory for Smallies! Wouldn't be surprised if you and I have crossed paths, I'm very familiar with that area.

I normally start out by that clump of pencil reeds infront of the over look then venture around with the trolling motor

Topwater, a close second is watching the gills flare to inhale the tube that I am sight fishing with.
Only 27 days, six hour and 25 minutes from the time I hit send. But hey who's counting

I really do not have a favorite one. Chug bugs, Yellow Magic, Skitter Pop, Skitter Walk, Zara Spooks, Sammy's, as well as buzzbaits have done well for me. I am a topwater nut and have and carry WAY to many types, sizes and colors. I tend to stay with the cheaper lures. Muskies seem to know when you are throwing expensive lures and it is then that they decide that it is time for an appetizer.

My favorite way to fish Smallies on Mille Lacs is with Slider driving, using his tackle, and watching his boat bounce off the rocks. We catch fish too. The rest of the time I'm chasing walleyes.
Nothing better than sight fishing on a flat sunny day, but that doesn't happen on the pond nearly enough.
