Kab Ice conditions?

#668759 - 04/30/08 08:22 AM

Any signs of the ice loosening up around shore, or is opener looking to be a longshot?

Try this link. Click on "Kab" and it'll give you historic ice out date of a lot of lakes. Shows Kab still ice-covered...pray for warmth!

I assume another kick in the jewels would just be cruel and unusual at this point.

Kick well placed, my friend. Well timed as well.

Wasn't trying to kick anybody, sorry if I offended. Was only trying to give the guy some info to look at to help out. Been watching the ice-out conditions regularly myself, and doing more than a little worrying.

Search the internet for Lake Kabetogama and when you find it you should get a page that has like the area commerce on it. there should be a fishing report from the General Store , check that out. FF

On Thursday the Ash River was open, most ice was out on Sullivan Bay and where Kab and Namakin come together some ice was out. I could boat to within about 200 yards of the Ash Lake visitors ramp.

Little rain and some wind will help.

Rev - re-read my post. I quoted Kooty and responded to him (in jest)......didn't intend to insult you. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for the link!

Hey Rev,

Timmy and I got a little banter going from something the other day. I felt it would have been cruel to jab him again at that point.

However, today's a new day. Timmy, we got open water on Mille Lacs.

Since I don't have a smily that is sticking his tounge out, I will have to resort to the old faithful.......

Still Ice at Kab, I'm told......

I heard on the news last night most lakes are opening up. Sounds like the bigger lakes are still iced in, but you never know. It just might surprise you by Saturday.

On that thread I posted I see that Kab is under "partial cover" as of May 8...I also read somewhere else that Namakan and Ash Bay were open, but can't confirm.
Timmy, I got your clarification on the other post...sorry for the misunderstanding! Had me confused tho! Everybody on here seems so helpful to each other, and very courteous; thought for sure I was doing something wrong!
By the way all, GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR OPENER THIS WEEKEND!!! I'll be down south here rooting for you; two more weeks for me... Hope you hammer 'em!

Thanks Kooty! Timmy responded to another thread too, so now I feel better. I know us flatlanders have a bad reputation up there, but I swear we're not ALL from Chicago!
This is a class A site, lot's of helpful people. Would have hated to be the only dumba$$ on here! Hope the weather holds for you guys, knock 'em this weekend!
Good luck, and thanks again!

Fishing was actually good....but getting enough for a meal was tough....6 guys, two boats and the grand total was 4 keepers(one of which was 17" on the nose - which earned us an -chewing and a warning from the C.O.) Lots of fish in that 19-22" range plus a handful of 23-25" fish.

All day rain and 40 degree temps on Saturday made for a chilly day.Jig/rainbow was the hot bait.....

I have spent the last two Memorial Days on Nam/Kab and have not run into a crappie yet. Too early? They are in really shallow around Brainerd on the lake I fish. My luck with eater Walleyes has been tough the last two years up there so a few crappies might do the trick!

Re: Kab Ice conditions?

I have never really looked into the crappies up there, so I can't help you there. We have usually relied on hammering a decent pike for a shore lunch if(when) we come up short on walleyes to eat. It is pretty common to be unable to get a shore lunch worth of keeper eyes. A short time around a weedbed with spoons or spinners and we usually can get a couple 5 lb pike to grace the table.

It was really, really slow for us over Mem Day. Anyone else have tough fishing?

I'm headed up today. Hopefully we can find some eyes... or anything willing to bite for that matter. I'm hearing mixed reports on depth etc so hopefully it won't take too long to put a pattern together. I'm just looking forward to getting away...

We were up over the holiday weekend. We did pretty well - nothing incredible, but still good fishing. We found fish in literally every spot we tried over the weekend except one. We typically would get 2-3 keepers and a dozen 'too bigs' for each morning/evening. We found fish any where from 8 to 24 ft - and literally every depth in between. 10-15 ft was our definatel best depth range for the areas we fished. Sunday night - during the rotten storms that passed through, we hammered them - with lots of keepers mixed in with the big ones. Biggest in my boat - 24". Lots of 19-22 inch fish.

Jigs/rainbows&fatheads were the ticket for us.
