Two Harbors

#673428 - 05/12/08 05:10 PM

I did the breakwater thing for a few days over the Mothers Day weekend. For the most part it was pretty windy with not many souls on the lake in the Two harbors area in boats. Saturday there were a few and Friday had some in the morning. Reports from the boats were meager at best.
Some trout were going to boats off the Stewart river wile jigging the deep water.

I had a mixed bag over three days of casting. Friday I had two break-offs from some super solid fish that hit real deep, so I assume those to have been trout. Saturday I caught a dink coho and an even dinkier laker trout. Sunday morning would have been like fishing in a hurricane while the afternoon was about perfect. I ended up with three nice fish, all lakers that ran to around 10 pounds each. A laker limit doesn't come often from the wall, but this one was certainly dandy for me.

I had the chance to talk with a lot of disgruntled anglers heading home on Sunday afternoon. Reports of cold, wet and no fish were more common than not. I saw a lot of long faces.

A limit out there is great, I was out there three weeks ago and didn't even get a bite.

I was up there a few weeks ago and got nothing also. Where exactly do you fish out there? Do you fish the lake side or the harbor side?

I fish right off the end, casting pretty much at a 45 degree angle from either point. From the inside point I cast towards the end of the old breakwater across the bay. On the outside point I cast towards Wisconsin at the angle mentioned.

I use 1/2 and 5/8 ounce Mepps Cyclops lures in solid gold and add an orange stripe with tape on 1/2 of the face side front the tie-on end to the hook end. For spinners I use the long-cast heavy-weights that Mepps offers in 5/8 ounce, gold body, gold blade and an orange dip on the body. 8 pound vanish clear for line. Use a quality ball-bearing swivel.

Regardless of what I cast, I always cast as far as possible, then allow the lure to drop all the way to the bottom with the bail open. This allows the lure to drop straight down and not tether back into the rubble at the base of the wall. For the spinner I start the retrieve with a sharp snap to get the blade moving and then I crank in sloooowly. The blade gets pretty much the same retrieve.

Don't look for the hits to be sharp. They will simply "be there"....like you have cranked into a hang-up. I load the rod at a hit, get my free hand on the drag adjustment, and then wait to see how the fish reacts. If I feel a lot of shaking, I assume the fish to be under 4 pounds. If the fish is just a dead weight making subtle shakes and straight-away movement, I get on the drag. I'll run a fairly loose drag and use my hand to slow down any aggressive runs if they seem to be moving too easy.

We do single and multiple trout limits in the boat with frequency, but in all the years I have fished the wall, this is like the fifth time I have had a 3 fish limit of trout. Last September I had a limit of trout one day, but they were smaller than these....one being in the 10 pound range. These were all nice trout, all redfins, all full of smelt.

I had some camera issues whil I was on the wall. After getting back to the cabin I replaced batteries and warmed the darned camera and managed to get what I thought were three nice pics, but only one came thru and I look like I'm about ready to dislocate something.

I'll try to get a pic here yet today.

The fishing is best out there, but I have had very good luck from the outside of the dogleg to the end and back to the inside of the dogleg. Actually I have done quite well about fifty feet ahead of the dogleg on the inside. There is a prop scour down in there that has a couple holes and high spots easily reached with a 1/2 ounce spoon. I fish it the same....ccast a fan pattern and make sure I start at the bottom each time. My best king came from that spot and I have landed a couple trout looking at twelve-15 pounds there too. This is a great low-light/cloudy day spot.

I'll be there at the end of the month.

You'd think that with all of the attention Superior gets at this time of year that it would merit some posting here....breakwater or otherwise.
