Mille Lacs Gravel Carp...

#675970 - 05/20/08 08:49 AM

I plan to head up for the day on Saturday to catch a few with Rootski and my son. Rootski said that he's bringing a fly rod to double haul a leech. Maybe it was mending a leech or something like that

The weather forecast looks promising. Are other IDO members planning to head up?

I'll be up. Can't wait to tangle with a few smallies. Anyone else think the state record could go down this weekend?

After seeing that 20 inch toad Grow got on opener, it would not surprise me if a 23" fish is caught.

We got one opening weekend around 20" and my god they look unreal! I am in the plans for making a 3 day weekend in June up there to troll for some eyes but mainly to chase smallies! Did I just say that

Four years ago I caught 4 pre-spawn smallies from 20.5 inches to 22.5 inches in one day. All released to fight again, but I probably should have mounted the 22.5. The biggest bellies I have ever seen in person on any smallie or largemouth, and I have a 23.5 inch 7lb. largie on the wall already. Might have to see if I can repeat that this year!

Why don't more people get graphite replicas? They last a whole lot longer than a typical taxidermy mount and they aren't that much more expensive. They will still look good twenty years from now.

Replica is a good option. The 7lb largie I mounted I caught when I was 12 years old fishing with my best friend in his canoe. So, that was 14 years ago. If I caught a big fish nowadays I would probably go with a replica.

It's a personal preference. For me, it is the difference between that being THE fish I caught, vs it REPRESENTing the fish I caught. And a skin mount properly taken care of, lasts just as long as a replica. My first 5lb bass was caught when I was 8 years old, and my grandpa had it mounted for me back then. It is still on my wall, and looks as good as it did 40 years ago.

Boy, it could be. With this late spring; the conditions seem to be right. If not this weekend I would think sometime in the next few weeks.

Personally, I wouldn't give you a wooden nickel for a replica. Hanging something on the wall that anybody can just pick up the phone and order does nothing for me. Skin mount or release are the only options I would consider for myself......personal preference.

I would much prefer to frame a nice enlarged photo of a fish and release it than order a replica.....

I am not sure about others - but that is the reason I would kill the fish and do the skin mount. Nobody should be chastised for legally killing ANY state record fish, ever.

You can go on Ebay and buy a skin mount of just about any species you want and if they don't have the size you're looking for... the taxidermist will go "aquire" one for you. Both a reproduction and a skin mount are available if you have the cash.

Do you think your dentist actually caught all those big fish because they were skin mounts?

Some like skin mounts. Some like repos. Potatoe. Patatoe. Each to their own I guess. Although I really don't understand the desire to kill a fish to remember it.

There seems to be a lot of speculation online about this for both smallies and Larry. I highly doubt the late spring and cooler water temps will make this spring a state record bass bonanza. Hopefully I will eat my words because I catch a 10lber.

I do not think there is anything wrong with either. I have 2 deer on my wall, one walleye(real) a coyote pelt and a ruffed grouse. I also have a set of 6x6 Elk antlers, that I paid a $100 for... hey their cool !!!

I have to agree with you James. IMHO, the best "trophy" you can put on your wall is a replica mount of the fish you caught with a nice photo of you below it actually releasing it.

President Teddy Roosevelt once said...."Any sportsman who is not also a conservationist, is nothing more than a fool."
