Bait fish or Shad Schools

#678497 - 05/28/08 10:34 AM

Anyone out there marking many schools of bait fish this spring so far?

I haven't see any schools of them at all lately.

I know they spawn in early June along the shorelines around the main channel but I need to have another chat with Tim Larsen (local DNR fisheries biologist) to see if he can give me any more info on them.
Like what temperature, if any, do they usually spawn at.
You got any questions you might want answered about them John? I may as well have him answer as many as he can all at once.

I found some good pods of shinners in late April, but have not been out for a while. If I remember right they will spawn in early/mid June depending on water temps. The shad should be in about the same time frame. I just hope there are more shad schools than last year. I thought their numbers were down last year. They had a definate migration in the lake last year that made things interesting. For bass fishing that is.

Darin,

I thought the numbers of shad were down last year also.

Which makes me wonder what the walleyes are eating. I have not cleaned any lately so I can't go by stomach contents.

One things for sure, there not going hungry. Most of the walleyes and saugers we've caught are pretty fat and healthy looking.

Joel,

I don't have any specific questions, but I will be interested in any info Tim has for you.

The fish I cleaned the last time I was out had a few small whitebass in their bellies, along with some other small (2 to 3 inches) fish that I couldn't identify. Possibly shiners, but I'm not good at identifying half digested fish. I also found two crayfish.

My guess is they are eating more shiners and whitebass. I have seen tons of shiners in the areas I have fished the last years and a half. I know the fish are not starving, especialy from what I caught over the last year. I will also be intersted to hear what he has to say.

I sent him an email last night with several questions.
Will copy it over to this forum when he sends back answers.
