Need a walleye report on the St Louis River

#678582 - 05/28/08 03:45 PM

I would like to make a trip to the river this year. Could someone tell me how the landings are and if the walleye are on the way down? What week should I plan my trip?
thanks --

LAW...welcome to IDO!

We were up there earlier this week (Sunday and Monday). For the most part, we found the walleye fishing to be pretty slow from bridge down to Spirit Lake...a fish here and a fish there. That said, we did have about an hour and a half on Monday afternoon (mid day), where we were constantly hooked up. As they say, all good things must come to an end...it stopped just as quickly as it started Coincidentally, we snagged a fair number of shiners during that same period. To that end, the hot baits were Flicker Shads and Shad Raps in the shad pattern.

That said, I have to admit that we abandoned the walleye fishing a fair amount of the time, as we were having a great time catching smallies and northerns. Flicker Shads and Shad Raps in a golden shiner/crawfish pattern, pitching shorelines.

Coupled with decent weather, great company and a ton of wild life, it was just what the doctor ordered

Hope this helps!

LAW...

After reading your original post, I realized that I forgot to mention access at the landing. We didn't have any problems launching at the campground just below the 23 bridge. As always, the river level is fluctuating due to opening/closing of the dam...use extra caution in the shallower areas. Can't speak to Boy Scout, but there sure were plenty of vehicles there (more so, on Sunday).

I've gotta believe the fishing is going to improve with warming water temps. Just be prepared to keep searching (especially down stream)...

Have fun and good luck!
