Any Tips

#678716 - 05/29/08 04:35 AM

Well, I have to admit I am not much of a bass fisherman. Grew up fishing largemouth but my smallie fishing has been limited to accidental catches while bobber fishing the rocks for walleye.

This weekend that all will change!

Let me tell you what I plan to do and then you can please critique me and add anything that I may be missing.

I fish out of Macs Twin Bay and from there I plan to head out to the Hawkbill buoys and fish the shallow rocks. I'm hoping it is calm and I can move quietly with the trolling motor casting at the buoys and around them. I will also hit the rock reef south toward Isle and fish that area as well. From there I may work some shorelines between the bays and then definetly make a trip through the bay.

What will I use?? I plan on using a couple things. I plan to use a couple different crankbaits, 4 inch tube jigs and then I may try some type of plastic worm, have yet to purchase the plastic worms yet but will make a trip to Gander on Friday.

So how does this sounds?

I do not know the areas you are planning to fish, but your choice of baits is good.

Try this, it does work. Get yourself some zoom ultra vibe speed craws, natural colors would be better. Then feed them onto a 1/8 to 3/16 jighead with a stout hook. Cast it out and reel it in just like you are reeling in any other lure. Just a straight steady retrieve. The craws will do the work by themselves. Just make sure you use the real zoom ultra vibe speed craws. You will catch smallmouth on these, I guarantee it.

For the plastic worms I would go with a smaller Senko type or Zoom Super Fluke. Sorry but I don't have any ideas what might be best for colors. I tend to use Pearl or Bubblegum Super Flukes so I can see the action of the bait and know visually when a strike occurs.

You should really try #4 rattlin/suspending shad raps in chrome/blk, crawdad, and firetiger. Or the #4 jointed version. Small baits but dig very well. Fishing them over shallow rocks has benn very good for my boat. Don't worry bout walleyes hitting them; they don't like them . Good luck! Sportsmans whse has the baits you will need.

Follow Up:

Well....I threw everything I had excpet my x-rap! And that is what my buddies slayed them on! They caught a mess of smallies ranging from 16-19inches all on the X-Rap -Firetiger.

Saturday evening while slip-bobber fishing for walleyes my brother in the boat next to me caught a few with the biggest just shy of 21 inches. That same morning in the same spot he caught 4 in an hour slip-bobber fishing for walleyes with a leech. Weird thing was I was doing the same thing and caught no smallies either. Must not like me. Next week after my trip to Ely I will be back and I will be successful!

Here is a shot of the almost 21 inch fish. It was low light and zoomed in from a good distance but he didn't have a camera and wanted a shot.

Tim, I would recomend you focus on tube jigs. The bass are just starting to move up onto their beds. Tubes imitate crayfish, which bass will not let around their beds. They see a tube and instinctively pick it up and move it away.

Pumpkinseed is my first color of choice, and early season like this 3" tubes are more effective than 4". Berkley Power Bait's are 3".

Good Luck!

Jack, Thanks for the tip. Will report back in a week or so with results.

I've got a half day trip going out of Mac's in the AM, and will be done about noon. Look me up and we can share notes.

Never made it up last weekedn. I ended up going up to the Boundary Waters to relax! Had a good time and fished smallmouth up there.

Next trip to Mille Lacs will be next week Tues - Thur. Will be fishing with my 3yo daughter. We'll see how that goes. Have a new boat now with much more room so it should be easier.

My cousin Scott w/ a Fall Lake Smallmouth.
