17" Walleye Slot - Why it's a good idea

#682264 - 06/10/08 09:08 AM

I attended the SRCL (Sauk River Chain of Lakes) Annual Meeting last Saturday and the the proposed 17" Walleye slot and 3 fish limit was discussed. A few old timers stood up and complained about loss of local business due to a reduced bag limit and slot. One guy even argued about hook mortality....

The bottom line is this, Slot limits WORK, they have been proven to improve a fishery and produce trophy Walleyes. This being said, there needs to be better enforcement of rules & regulations or anything we do will be a waste. I've only seen the DNR on the SRCL 2 times the past 9 years (I was happily checked for my license & livewell once) There are WAY to many people on the chain that keep EVERYTHING they catch. I asked the question of whether or not the Water patrol can check fishing regulations, and was told they can, but they hardly ever do...so what's the point? I voted "YES" to the 17" slot and 3 fish limit, I hope you did to..it makes sense for the FUTURE of the SRCL fishery...

I must agree that I do love slot limits. I hate seeing people leave with limits of 5 pounders in the fall through the spring. Two thumbs up in my book. Iowa recently put a slot limit on walleyes on the Mississippi river from Dubuque down, and I tell you that the difference is noticable in just 2 years. walleys/sauger ratio has gone up and the size has been bigger is as well for both species.

Slot limits do work and they are great, not much else to say about that. Anyone who doesn't believe that hasn't experienced them first hand.

Heck I wish we had slots on more species. In Ontario there are slots for Eyes, Pike and even bass in some places. The fish just keep getting bigger and bigger!

It's a pretty rough day when you have a hard time catching eaters due to all the 17.5-23 inch fish you catch!
