Hayward lakes update 6/14-6/15

#683995 - 06/16/08 07:20 AM

Walleye fishing remains pretty consistent in the Hayward WI area.

We spent the weekend targeting walleye on a couple of different lakes. On the clear lake that we fished, our best success was found pitching cabbage edges in 8-10 fow with 1/16 oz jigs tipped with fatheads. The best cabbage beds were in bays off the main body of the lake. This produced good numbers of eyes up to 19+".

On the more fertile lake that we fished, the cabbage beds in the bays were walleye free, and the best action we had was on main lake structure. Again, pitching or dragging light jigs tipped with minnows or crawler halves was a productive presentation. Fish on these main-lake sand humps were relatively shallow, 6-9 feet.

Water temps through the area are strugging to make it out of the mid 60s. Perhaps we'll see 70 by the 4th of July.

Forgot to add the other available bites in the area:

Crappies are just about done with the shallows. Look for them bunching up off the cabbage beds in slightly deeper water.

LMB are staging for their spawn. Not in the ultra-shallows yet but definitely moving up. We caught a bunch casting cranks (SSR5s and SSR7s) in hot steel.

Gills are bedding up. Some nice beds have appeared over the course of the past week in sandy areas with scattered weeds.
