Salmon & Trout Fishing out on Superior

#684260 - 06/16/08 06:50 PM

Hey everyone,

I' ll be headed up to the Cornucopia, WI area over the 4th and I was wondering what to expect for a Trout/Salmon bite. I wont be running downriggers so trying to concentrate on fish holding in less than 6o feet.

Any tips/advice is greatly appreciated!

You'll have to motor out a ways to find trout water, but try a deep diving dipsy diver or jet diver with a flash bait or stick behind it. Trout in quite deep water can see a bait well above it and will rise to hit a long ways. We have marked fish at 100 feet and were only trolling at 40 feet and got them to hit. Trout love to follow a bait and will for a long way.

We've done pretty well on Lake Trolls or Cow Bells and a standard crawler and spinner harness pulled behind a 1/2 lbs ball. Mainly Steelhead and loopers, but they're fun and easy, may even p/u an occasional coho too.
Cheap, easy and it works.
Have Fun!

If you are not running riggers, pull some Dipsy's. You could run pumphandles off the back, in place of riggers. You could run lead, off boards, that would work well. I think you will be suprised, unless things change a lot in the next 3 weeks, the water isn't going to be overly warm. There still should be a fair bite in the, less than 60' water. I'm heading up this week-end, should be a good time.

Don't forget to talk to people staying in the marina. They are a wealth of info. They were all very nice to me and my boy when we went up there fishing. We got blanked but still had an awesome time swimming and site seeing since it's such a beautiful area. Have fun at Fish Lipps!

Good Luck,

Ferny.

Water is VERY dirty. Fishing right now is best out about 5-7 miles. Find the edge of the clear water, and troll that. Surface temps of 58 degrees, down 20 it was 43 degrees. There was not a lot of active fish in the bays. The lake trout and chinook were definitely more bite friendly in cooler, cleaner water at the mudlines. Stop over at Outdoor Allure, and pick up some of the local favorites, in gold and Kevorkian, then talk with Craig or Joe, they will help you out. Hopefully the water will clear for you some by then. Keep us posted.

Will Do WTA.

We visted them up there on Memorial Day, and one of their friends was kind enough to take myself and a buddy out for a day fishing out by eagle island. We managed a couple of Lakers and some short strikers, but thats about it...

I've fished the great lakes for Trout & Salmon many times before, so I'm hoping that if the weather cooperates, we can lay the down on some fish!!!

On a side note...Does anyone know if it will help if i pick up a map chip for Superior, since my chip only has the inland MN lakes, or will I be fine with just a paper map with GPS coordinates on it????

I have the Navionics Maritime Great Lakes map, and the Navionics Premium WI North, and neither one of them are any good for Corny or Herbster. I am not sure about Lake Master though. Here is a pic of a 18.5" Brown, that hit a Forage Minnow in 23' of water about 6' down.

To the best of my knowledge there really isn't a good chip for the big lake. Lake Master doesn't cover it all, other then it's big and blue.
Navionics has an ok version, but it's not even 5 foot increments from what I saw. Mostly warnings and shipping lanes.
If you find a good one let us know.

I just returned from a trip to Two Harbors. The boat wasn't along this trip, but I did do the breakwater on five occasions. Not much for action for me.

The water was in great shape but the wind wasn't in a real favorable direction for casting most of the time. I did have several follows including one laker which looked to be about 40 inches....long and lean. This critter turned right at the surface maybe twenty feet away from me.

Mowing the cabin's yard and trails occupied a lot of my time, so fishing got shuffled into the scene while the tractor cooled. Not how I like to spend my time there, but as the saying goes, "someone has to do it".

I didn't see a ton of boating activity either, so I assume that the bite has been soft in the area. Still....it was nice to be out on the wall.

I got all my plans set for the 12-13 and 19-20 for Two Harbors... Haven't heard of alot of action but the ones who are catching fish are deep all ready. Some as deep as 180 fow. It's too early for that. Hopefully the weather will cooperate being I'm taking newbies on both weekends. Told them to bring the dramamean and leave the beer in the cabin.
CT... if your up there maybe we can make an evening run if your not too busy with the grass.LOL.

Hey Guys,

Just a quick recap of how our success went this weekend on Superior. We started off getting out Thursday night, out of Cornucopia, and worked the Eagle Island area with Spoons & Cranks with no Success.

On Friday, I was able to tag along with a local guy, and agian fishing was somewhat slow. I managed a nice 6lb Brown of a Downrigger, and a buddy of mine got a 3lb laker off a dipsy.

On Saturday we ventured out in my boat again, and decided to try the Bay in hopes of finding some Browns in tight. Managed a nice 22" eye off the a planer board and a crank trolled in 22 fow. After no more success, we headed back out to the Eagle island area and managed a couple 3lb lakers.

Not great success by any means, but a great time anyways. Seems like the Trout we did manage came from the clear water, anywhere from 30-60 feet down in 120-160 fow.

Thanks for all the replies.
