I am pulling black plastic shavings from my fuel tank. First question 1: How do I purge this tank of this junk I am sucking into my fuel system ( I already have taken the tank off) . Question 2: I assume this is being caused by the gas cap but is there anything else that could possibly be causing the shavings??? They are curly in nature almost like they were pulled off a lathe, Thank you for any and all help....Bill

Sounds like you got fuel somewhere they were replumbing or had an enemy that left you a present. On a car that age things like plastic don't just show up and get in the system
If it is indeed the cap, that is an easy fix. Now that you have the tank of, can you put an in-line filter on that you can get to without having to pull the tank?
This is a Cougar Artic Cat, just to be a little more clear. My in line fuel filter must have been replaced 6 times last winter and now I am looking to fix it right, the shavings are the same material as the tank and cap, I plan on replacing all my fuel lines and tuning the carbs....

Sounds like you are getting your cap cross threaded , and it is now cutting its own threads in the plastic. may be the cap threads or tank and cap if so may have to replace both.Just a idea(Iam no mechanic)
