A buddy and I are going to be heading to Northern Wi to fish for a few days. Proably going to head out Thursday the 26th. I am going on the genoricity of my neighbors. Planiing on staying at one neighbors farm in Turtle Lake the first night and the other neighbors cabin in Oxbo for the next two. It's the first time I have really fished in either place, so I was hoping someone could let me in on a few good spots to try!

What are you going to fish for? I know Round Lake just N.W. of Turtle Lake has some huge bluegills, nice bass and some walleye but you have to find them. We usually go up and fish for the gills because they are just huge. The bass action will keep you busy as well. There have been some northerns as well but they are few and far between. Good luck!

I guess we will just be fishing for anything that bites. I have heard good things about Round before. Sometimes there's nothing like catching big gills. They taste mighty good too. Thanks

The key is to fish with small leeches for those big gills! Alot of times we fish in 10 f.o.w. with just a hook and a splitshot right off the bottom. Also the bass fishing can be fun...fishing with either buzz baits or spinner baits! They seem to bite on anything really! Good luck and hold on tight!

What county is the Round lake you are talking about in? I was just trying to find it in my lake map book and it has several rounds in different counties

"Big Round" is in the middle of Polk county, north and west of Turtle Lake.

Here is an up to date fishing report from a bait shop in Minocqua. Waters are finally warming up, some bodies hitting the high 60's. High pressure days follwed by short periods of storms keeping the bite down. Small windows of excellent fishing if you're at the right place at the right time.
Largemouth Bass: Good to very good. Some bass setting up to spawn, others, thanks to cool mornings last week are still staging in 8-10' weeds. Nice fish of 15-18" reported taking chatterbaits, spinnerbaits out in weeds. Tube jigs producing around flooded timber.
Smallmouth bass: Good. Some lakes to the north report fish still on beds. Overall the spawn is done. Tubes, chompers worked around gravel/rock bars. Twith baits (husky jerks, x-raps), good choice over humps at dusk.
Walleye: Good to fair, but improving. The full moon seemed to hurt daytime action after 6/18, but bite starting to pick up again. Be aware that the Hex hatch (mayflys) hasn't happened yet, that will shut things down, could be early July. Bite turning to a stronger leech/crawler preference. Kawaga, Minocqua, Squirrel, Willow Flowage, Rainbow Flowage best choices.
Musky: Fair. A few good reports from anglers fisihing after dark. High skies didn't help - but reports of late (6/23 - 6/24am) have anglers moving fish again, mostly on bucktails.
Yellow Perch: Good. Lakes and Flowages producing good catches. Slip-bobber, medium leeches, 1/2 crawlers amongst cabbage beds (8-12') or drowned wood (Flowages 14-20') best. Good fish to 12" from Squirrel, Kawaga, Minocqua, Willow, Rainbow.
Bluegills: Good. Should start bedding by end of this week as surface temps creep into high 60's, low 70's. Small leeches best, worms, small minnows also good. Should see surface action by weekend.
Crappie: Fair. Reports of fish scattered amounst 8-12' cabbage and cribs. Mini mites, tiny tube jigs.
If summer like weather stays, we should see a huge improvement in consistent action, it's been tough with a lot of wind and some cold nights/mornings. We are still a couple of weeks behind and it shows in spawning bass, bluegills and bug hatches.

Guys:
Finally made it out on the Rainbow last night. Not a lot going on, but it was the first time, so reacquainting myself to the full pool level of the flowage. Did manage two little 'eyes on sr5's in the black back and silver sides at 100 feet of line. Got both in areas that I liked last year when it was 17' below pool and they just looked very good dry. Might have had another, but we lost it just about to the boat. Water temp was 70*. No mayflies on the Rainbow. A friend reported that he had 67* on one of the larger lakes in the area and was seeing the smaller mayflies starting to come off. Hoping to get out on a big deep clear tonight to see what might be happening. Good luck during your trips up !!! Here is a link to that report on a weekly basis: Kurt's Island Bait

Just got back. We fished Evergreen and Mason in Oxbo. Caught quite a few over the three day period. Nothing really big. Small and large mouth, perch, sunnies, crappies. A little bummed since no walleye or muskie. We had a couple of follows. My very first cast was with my ultra-light and a crawler on a red hook. Bobber went under, was't much resistance reeling in(thought I caught one of those weed fish) it saw the boat, I saw it roll, 4lb line snap. We'll worth the trip. No delevopment on a the lake at all. Nice listening to the loons, watching the eagles, otter etc. No water, electric or cell signal. It just don't get much better than that

No algae bloom yet. A lot of cabbage below the surface. A lot of lily pad and reed patches. Went down to the Oxbo for a beer and a burger. The bartender said a lot of people had been on the river having some luck.

SteveO:
Got up to the TFF last night. Drifted a flat on the west side of a large island out from Murray's. Caught 'eyes, northern, perch and one large crappie. Split shot & floating jigs, weedless jigs, etc. were the techniques and all three baits; large fats, crawlers and leeches all caught fish. Only saw on Hex on the water before the skeeters got started. Water temps: mid 74*.

Mark good deal. sounds like the crawler and leech bite has been good. any size on the pike or the typical hammer handles?

SteveO:
Apparently last week Barry (one of my friends who used to guide, though not of the TFF much) used four dozen minnows to catch most of his fish and used crawlers and leeches along the way and after they ran out of fish. They had a nice limit of 16-21" fish and 20 of the nice perch to boot. As for the northern, he said they put a couple in the 25-28" range in the boat, but we were not so lucky on Tuesday night as all of our fish were pretty small running from 6-18"... Our fish came on minnows(fats) leeches and crawlers. Hoping to take my wife up there on Sunday.

Just spent the weekend on Nokomis. What a mess that lake is, lots of bullheads and little else. The electric company has to stop messing with that lake...

BigPike:
Thats a shame about Nokomis. I was hoping to fish Nokomis later in the month.
We'll also be fishing Alice and Mohawksin. We don't plan on targeting Muskie,, just LM,SM and Walleye.
What is up with Nokomis?? Is it the drawdown that is messing with it? I thought they were eliminating the special walleye limit on the lake because it had rebounded in the past few years???
Anyway,, any current info on Alice and Mohacksin would be great.
best wishes

I'm sure the fish are there, I did well ice fishing over Christmas for walleye, but there is a major bullhead investation, bullheads being caught everywhere and dead bulls all over the shoreline. I do believe the drawdowns are taking its toll on this lake
