Two Rivers Salmon Action

#684789 - 06/18/08 01:34 PM

The king salmon action has definatly started, we ran a two boat group trip and boated 24 for the morning. Nice sized kings for this time of year. The downriggers with green or blue glow spoons down 45 -55 feet and the green flasher with green crinkle Loner flies did well for us this morning. A number of missed fish, as the cold water temps have these fish putting up a great fight.

Good to hear. July 3rd can't come soon enough! Is the water clearing up much in close and how far out you heading?

July 10th cant come soon enough..

Nice report.. What brand/pound line are you guys running on your riggers?? Last year we ran superline and seem to lose too many. Thinking of running mono this year..

How could mono improve that ratio?

The water is still dirty and there are still the remains of tree's and things floating around, but it isn't bad if you keep a good watch. We are fishing deep from 120-240 feet outside the fish nets, it drops fast out there. I'm using 20# mono Ande on my downrigger rods.

Derek,

I dump the treble on my spoons for a siwash instead and have a lot better boating %. 17lb or 20 lb Big game on the riggers and high lines with 30lb Ulrtra cast on the pump handles and dipseys.

Thanks guys.

With the clips we have, superline needs to be double wrapped, this doesnt allow for very good hook ups. We were dragging quite of few small fish on the rigger lines. Sometimes for hours..

Downrigger rods are now set up with 20lb Gamma Line, went to Cabelas last night. Have sets of 1/0 and 2/0 siwasher hooks; also replaced the releases with the Off Shore Releases. Ready to go July 10th!

Mono gives you some shock absorber so they won't tear themself off, plus it's not as hard on the releases.

Ok, thanks. I use Blacks releases, and just switched my rigger lines over to Power Pro, this last winter. Unfortunately, I haven't had much luck, with the riggers yet to see the difference. The mono reels are in the boat, just in case though!

When battling big, hard fighting fish like a salmon or rainbow - the mono acts like a giant rubber band - helping to keep tension on the fish and not allowing the fish to get slack immediately followed by a jolt when thrashing. Super lines on the dipsies for me - but good old stretchy mono sure seems to be better for fighting the big ones.

I also run siwash hooks on all spoons. I am not sure it makes a huge difference, but I feel a lot more confident using them.
