Spawning Carp?

#684808 - 06/18/08 02:37 PM

My buddy JAKOB, my cousin and I were out fishing the shores at Riley Lake this morning for bass and saw hundreds of carp in the shallows all morning. Are they spawning right now? And if they are do they scare bass and pike out of the area? The fishing was much slower than usual and I've never seen that many carp in the area we were at. Just wondering if anyone knows what's up with that. Thanks.

I'm not sure if the carp spawn pushes the bass out but I was out yesterday on isles and they were spawning everywhere. It was also the first time all year I didn't get a single bass there.

I saw some today also.
I wish there was more bowfishing done to reduce their populations. Most lakes have HUGE populations of carp because not too many people harvest these fish other than the bow fishermen.

This is what it looks like after some yahoo thinks they need to kill for fun. Personally I think it is gross. I could barely breath it smelled so bad! Also while I was there 3 bow guys showed up and I couldn't even fish because the second they could see one they would shoot at it even going for my bait.

If you look at the photos the first picture is of carp the second is a bigmouth buffalo. Anybody pick that up? This is a native fish just as important as the beloved walleye.

Every fish has a purpose! Can you tell a buffalo from a carp?

Can't argue with outdoors. They get a bad rap. And yes I did notice it was a Buffalo! The only time I caught those were during the spawning run in Rice creek when I was a kid.

My guess is that the carp scare of the baitfish, thus scare off the bass.

Just don't lump all bowfishermen together. There are some bad eggs out there, sure. Probably a disproportionately large amount of bad eggs. But there are still a good share of ethical bowfishermen. It disgusts me to see dead fish on the banks no matter what the species and no matter who put them there, but that is not going to stop me from arrowing some water hogs--if I ever find some free time

Ralph all bowfishermen do this!

Just kidding ya! I know plenty of them.

I am not against it but this kind of behavior makes me lean! If a person takes fish home and throws them in the garbage and says nothing about it I would be much happier. A few places I have fished have smelled bad for this reason. I am trying to educate but I have been crabby and it will show a time or two. I bust chops on people who do this kind of behavior because it hurts groups of people, anglers or bowfishermen both kinds have those people who make the group look bad. Every group has these people in them. Many times it is ignorance and not stupidity. That is why I say ignorance is bliss. I feel the same way when people throw a fish over their back and call it catch and release. I will and have stopped fishing with individuals if they will not stop it. My point was more that fish need to be respected and there is no difference in harvesting with a bow or rod. Same goes for wanton waste!

Ralph I have talked to you before and I have always known you bowfish and have never held it against you. From the time I have been around you with fish and have not seen you throw one yet.

No hard feelings, Aaron. I knew exactly what you meant. Just wanted to make sure other folks know that there are some good bowfishermen out there!

Sorry I sometimes miss a point or two.
Too little of a mind with everything going on in it!
