If you where to just go carp fishing what would be some good baits? What do you do if you catch them do you keep them or throw them back?

Corn is usually going to be your best bet for bait. You can rig it very simply or choose a quite complex rig. A basic setup of a small to medium octopus hook with a small splitshot about two feet above the hook works well. Gob on as many pieces of corn as you can to completely cover the hook. As far as keeping them thats up to you, some people enjoy smoking smaller carp, and others enjoy them cooked many ways. If you choose not to keep them release them to fight another day as you would any game fish. It is illegal to throw them on the bank, thus stinking up the area for more ethical anglers. If you hook into some you'll have an absolute blast as they are one of the best fighting fish out there. Bring along a camera, post some photos, and let us know how you do. Good Luck!

When I was a kid Bob (child hood friend) would make dough balls from wheat germ and strawberry soda. We called them pig nuts. We really caught a lot on this concoction in a small lake.

I have never had carp, but I have been told you can put then in mason jars with water and vinegar. (the vinegar is to soften the bones) And I seem to remember being told that the have a blood line that needs to be cut out.

Good Luck

ive tried carp before. My brother had shot 2 and smoked them on the grill for several hours. The fillets were thick and they weren't that bad, but the thought of eating a carp made me gag and i had to stop. But other people enjoy them so it depends...

Corn and crawlers sometimes work but I have outfished people using corn and crawlers with a Hare's Ear Nymph before. Yes that's right, get one on a fly rod sometime my friend and hang on. They are probably the smartest fish swimming and they put up a better fight than any walleye would ever dream of. They are a cool fish and don't let anyone ever tell you that they are a Junk Fish. In many other places of the world, a big carp is the most prized possession. Another great thing is that the fishing pressure on these reel burners is minimal. I just hope some attitudes change. I find it wasteful to kill them for no good reason.

As far as eating goes, I never tried them before.

Make sure you check the DNR's website for information about the area you are going to catch them from. On the Mississippi there are constantly warnings about not eating carp caught from different areas of it.

Deffinately "google" carp fishing. There is lots of good information about different methods. If you Know where they are exactly, chum with a few handfulls of corn wait a while and toss in a hook with corn threaded on it. Then hang on! I lost the first St.Croix rod I bought fishing for carp. I watched it twitch a little and as I went to grab it, it launched out of the boat five feet and is now somewhere on the bottom of pool 15. Fun critters to catch!! 48lbs 8oz is my personal best and know that there are LOTS out there MUCH bigger.
good luck
