Fishing Report - Questions?

#685951 - 06/23/08 09:44 AM

Guys,
Fishing was pretty good for us this weekend. My wife and I fished the mud for about 5 hours on Sat. We ended up catching 8 fish ranging between 17 and 25 inches. All the fish we took were bobber fishing just on top of the edges with Leeches and red hooks. We attempted to drift with Lindy’s and spinners but couldn’t get anything to go. We switched up and had a great time bobber fishing. The best part of the whole experience is that when we were attempting to drift I had to continually move us because there were so many boats fishing the same flat. We said the hell with it and caught all of our fish on a flat that we shared with only one other boat.
I do have 2 questions that I am hoping some of you can help me answer –
1. A couple weeks ago I unhooked my Lowrance GPS because I was leaving my boat in the harbor for the evening. After I plugged it back in, my reception was in and out for a while and now I can’t get anything. It simply says GPS Module not responding. I can’t acquire any position. I don’t have the answer and I am hoping someone does? What to do?
2. Fishing the mud?? Bobber fishing has been great but I have had limited success this year working the edges of the mud with lindy’s and spinners. I have used 7 to 9 foot snells but have a question about the presentation. Do most of you keep your sinker just out of the mud or let it drag the bottom? I am wondering if my limited success with this technique is because I have been dragging my sinker? Your thoughts?
Good Luck

I think it depends on the length of your snell

Wabasha-

Most of the old school livebaiters lift and drop the sinker on the mud otherwise it will stir up the bottom and effect the bite. I've had good results both ways but i usually will only drag a bottom bouncer and lift and drop lindy rigs.

Wab-

I usually do both when I'm rigging. Some days keeping it out of the mud works better, some days dragging works better. I also think it may depend on the flat you are on. Some seem to have more mud or are softer on top of them then others. Once I heard the secret of holding the sinker off the bottom that was all I ever did until my brother schooled my dragging it one day. Now I do both and let the fish dictate what they want.

As far as your Lowrance issue. I have a buddy that also just came up with the same deal of GPS module not responding. Just this weekend 2 times in the middle of the day I lost signal and that was followed up with GPS Module Not Responding". I just turned it off and then turned it back on and all was fine. Not sure why.

Have you down loaded the most recent software?? I have not and will do this week

I have had the same problem with the GPS module not responding. My issue turned out to be the terminating resister for the bus which my lcx113 and 520 are hooked together on. Turns out that those 120 ohm terminating resisters are known issues. If it continues I would start there if you are running a backbone type system.

Also if you don't have any gell on your plugs try putting some on. they protect the connection and keep water out of the plug.

Good luck

Granted I have an older Lowrance unit, (LCX-16) but every time I head up to the pond from the Twin Cities i get this error... I found that I get a true signal about 30 minutes after I am in the general area.

dont know why it does this, but eventually if I leave the unit alone, it will find itself.

I have ran mine on the pond for last 3 years a ton and have only recently experienced this problem. I appreciate the responses and hope to get it figured out after the 4th.

Check the power and connections going to your module. The power to your module may be interrupted--even if it has been soldered.

I had to replace the GPS puck on my 520C GlobalMap and 2 weeks later had the same problem and then had to replace my Head Unit. Anyway now they both are working great.
