Question?

#686479 - 06/24/08 01:50 PM

I was up fishing the pond for smallies and largies this last weekend. I say quite a few dead walleyes floating in the weeds. I fished Cove and Waukon bays and also say the near Isle. What's the deal?

Hooking mortality. Both from joe fisherman and the "c/r" tournies every weekend. You were down on the wind blown side so the numbers would have been there.

Not only hooking mortality, but possibly "NETTING MORTALITY". I have seen a couple fish this year floating and have stopped to look at them. A couple of the fish have had half there gill plates torn off. Might this be from the lost gill nets. Just my .02.

I'm sure there is some hooking mortality & fish die(think of how many thousands of fish simply die in that lake each year). However, I don't think we can say it's catch and release tourney's causing the issue. The weekend anglers have to abide by the same rules the tourney boys do.

I buried a lot (4) of very big fish that had been in the water a looooooooong time. I think it was more old age than any thing. The water temps have not been warm enough for that much hooking mortality & there was not sign of netting damage, but they were well "aged".
