Not true boats and trailers both have titles in mn.
If you don,t get them don,t buy it.

not all boats have titles
if there older or under a certan length there is no title
trailers are titlted.
if there is no title a bill of sale will work just pay to have it noterised

I sold my 2006 ranger to a guy in Colorado. The boat is licensed thru the DNR and the trailer has a title with the state. I signed over the title to the guy and made a bill of sale (hand made) him and I signed it and both have copies.

If you can meet at a MN DMV, it will save a lot of time and potential headaches in the long run

I believe on boat in MN that don't have titles the DNR registration is what you need to transfer the boat, only did it once a long time ago. Not 100% sure about the trailer though, I would meet at a license station that does DNR stuff too, I bet if you called a MN and a IL license station they could give you a really good answer.

I agree with the point a few guys made, Meet at a License Center that does both Minnesota & DNR work.

My wife used to work at the Chaska one and I cannot tell you how many horror stories she was told by people that did not do this and found out the hard way. Auto Title tell you to do just that. (1-story: A couple came in with a buyer to transfer a title for a vehcile they were selling. My wife was new at the time and asked why they all came in. They guy said a few year prior he was arrested and spent a night in jail as after they had sold a car, the buyer never transferred the title and was involved in a serious Pedestrian hit and run. They had to prove they sold the vehicle). The extra time may be worth many future headaches.

Good Luck

You should receive both a signed title on the boat and a separate signed title on the trailer. There should also be a registration sticker that the owner should sign. Check the title and be sure it is not showing a lien on it. If it does, be sure you get the lien release paper from the institution that had the lien listed. Also get a signed bill of sale showing the amount paid and all ID numbers/MN number of the boat/motor etc. so you are covered.
If you have all these, the change over to IL should be easy.

Thank you soo much for all the good information. I will call and ask him to meet me at a DMV office. He says he had a dnr registartion on the boat but no title. I really wanted the boat and gave up on it. I will call him tomorrow and find out exactly what he has and try and set something up on Monday. This was just a nice 15ft.fishing boat with a 25hp.Thanks again.

If it is a 15' boat, it probably doesn't have a title. Look on the registration tag. In the upper right order it would say YES under TITLE if it has a title. Sorry, I didn't ask the length of the boat first..
