I think it takes a lot to make me angry. But a person hit my over heat button this last weekend.
In the spirit of our legal system..."innocent until proven guilty", I'm not going to go into any details on the folks "allegedly" involved...until there's a charge and conviction. If and when that happens, I'll be happy to post the name(s) here.
I'm also going to say that this is second hand info that came to me from parties involved.
Last Saturday night at Everts Resort the manager and at least on camper had a person banging on their individual doors. This person claimed that they lost someone in the river. He went swimming and was lost going down stream.
The police were called and a boat was launched by a Everts regular looking for what possibly could, by this time be a body.
Luckily a man was found holding on to a tree in the river....very wet and very (what appeared to be) drunk. Apparently his goal was to swim across the river. With the flow around 40,000 cubic feet per second, anyone that knows anything about the river, knows this guy is lucky to be alive.
He was thrown a rope and once into the boat return to shore where he was met by the rest of his group including three kids all well under 10 years old...and the police.
On a side note, this fella that could have just as well lost his life the night before was at the bait shop looking for more beer early Sunday morning. It was not sold to him.
End of story, happy ending right?
Any of the folks that have visited Everts over the last 30 or so years must know or at least have ran into Pete. Pete is a guy in his 80's and enjoys coming up from IA to fish. A friendly fella. You can tell, I like Pete. I think everyone likes Pete.
When Pete comes up his boat is always put in the water for him. At 80+ he's earned that. He leaves it tied to the dock at night as he's done for ...well forever.
Tuesday morning came around and not only was Pete's boat gone, but so were the rods out of another boat tied up close by. Pete, after spending the morning looking for his boat, went home to Ia cutting his vacation short.
Now I am disgusted enough that there were rods taken, but to be honest even though many where St Croix rods, they could be replaced reasonably for a price, a price that may have exceeded the value of Pete's boat.
The boat was worth nothing to anyone but Pete. It isn't a fancy boat, in fact the original seats were removed, worn out I suspect, and replaced with chairs. This was a fishing boat with a full windshield and worth...well, it was priceless to the person that owned it.
Five rods were found in the campground near Everts. Very close to the campsite where the fella was camping that "went for a swim".
Two days later Pete's boat was found south of Red Wing with front end damage. It still was a float. I was fearing it would be found half sunk in some back channel.
I'm a new comer to Everts. Only been around regularly for two years. This is the first time I've heard of anything like this. The regulars watch out not only for each other...but they watch out for all fisher people that visit this icon on Pool 4. The clientel that vacation at Everts are some of the best folks I've ever met. Why wouldn't they be, they are vacationing on one of the best fisheries in the midwest!
It's been said this was one guy out of a group that acted alone. Possibly a local.
To the person responsible:
What you don't realize, I don't think is that the guy that you stole from is the guy that quite possible saved your life just a few nights earlier. (I know, you were too drunk to remember any of that.)
What you did is everything that is anti Everts, anti fishing and just plain anti American. You gave the resort a black eye, took away something from two people that would GIVE you rods if you needed them and you stole and damaged the boat owned by a old timer that would have taken you fishing if you had just asked.
What's your excuse? I thought so.
Be a man, turn yourself in, dry out, pay for damages, apologize in person to the people you've hurt and I'll take you fishing.
As it sits right now, you are the lowest form of life I can think of and that doesn't come easily from me.
BK
Unfortunatly, this type of person doesn't visit IDO. I doubt he will ever see this.
On a brighter note, I'm just heading out for the '08 Anglers As Role Models Event at Everts. Taking a little brother/sister and their "big" out will be putting that smile back on my face!
Be a man, turn yourself in, dry out, pay for damages, apologize in person to the people you've hurt and I'll take you fishing.
I’m sure it won’t happen. People like this have no regard for anyone but themselves. You said it, they are the lowest life form on this earth.
With any luck, one day he will pull a stunt like this again (and he will) with the wrong person, get caught, and have the living crap beat out of him before the cops are called. You know, the “he must have fallen into the rocks” story!
It is just good to hear no innocent by standers where hurt while rescuing the dumb
Everyone at Evert’s has the right to be pissed off, heck, I’m even pissed now
I pray justice is the final chapter of this story!

BK....I try and look at it this way. The vast majority of people are fine. Lots of them are wonderful (especially IDO folks ). That leaves about 2% of the population that are absolute . The mayhem they cause is all out of proportion to their numbers, and you can't avoid them. They're the ones who are on the news every night too. Tough to ignore, but I try and appreciate the 98% that make life so rewarding and fun.
Karma will catch up to this guy. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow. Maybe not for a long time. But eventually the sky is going to come down on this bozo and life will get very difficult for him. I've seen it many times before.

Excellent idea! Let's turn this into something positive. I'm in...

that is why i don't trust anyone around my stuff, and it is always locked up. this type of stuff happens more then people realize, and especially at "safe", "normal" places. all you can hope for is the truth to come out in the future, and nail the guy to the wall for it.
and even though i have no idea who this pete guy is, nor have i ever even launched at everet's before, i'd be willing to kick in a few bucks to help this guy out. People don't deserve what happened to him, and especially an elder who has paid his dues in this lifetime and should expect respect for him and his equipment.
and if this guy ever gets caught....I know plenty of backwaters that he could get "lost in"...

I'm with Whitetailaddict and Rootski, let's get some donations put together to help out Pete and his boat repair. Brian how much damage to his boat? I will gladly add to the cause. I won't even comment on my feelings towards this jerk as it's not fit for print. Let's turn it into a positive!
-------------------- "Each time I arrive safely back to the dock, I hope that I'm a little better of a person than when I left."
I'd also be more than happy to make a donation to the cause. I'm sure we could come up with some stuff to make Pete's boat better than ever.
It's about time that somebody gets something good out of a bad situation. Even though I haven't ever had the pleasure of meeting Pete, it sounds like he's more than earned his time on the water and the boat that he fishes from. I look forward to helping out.
On the one side of the pendulum is a low life, swinging in the other direction is the IDO members.
This post was not intended to be a fund raiser post. It was my way of venting my low regard for this person and the actions he took. It should be a message of reminding people to watch out for each other.
In talking with Dean, we both feel that if anyone is inclined to send in a donation, we shouldn't stop them. On the other hand PLEASE, don't feel this is a solicitation for Pete.
If you feel inclined to participate, please send checks to: Pete Schartz C/O Everts Fishing Resort N1705 860th St Hager City, WI 54014
Checks should be made out to Pete Schartz
The damage to the boat is at the very least several hundred dollars, but likely to be much more. Pete also lost all of his fishing tackle and rods.
I personally want to thank anyone that helps to "pay it forward".
I'll be down this weekend to drop off a check for Pete, one day I hope to be that old guy in the boat. I talked today to a personal friend that was down there last Saturday night; according to him, this guy your talking about was out of control all day. Thanks for the post Brian, very well written.
Heard the story at the ARM event. That is just sad people will do somethng like that.

Knowing the work was done at Bay City Hardware by Dan; all can have great confidence that the job was done right the first time. There are a lot of good boat guys out there, and Dan ranks right up there at the top. Thanks Brian and Dean.
Pete sends a big thankyou to all who contributed and to the well wishers!
I as well cant say enough good things about Dan at BayCity Hardware......How things used to be is still alive and well at Dans shop. Thanks again to everyone!

Very sad story and just goes to show how disrespectful some people can be while others as the members here on IDO will step up and help out someone that has been attacked by these types of 's... Way to go IDO!
God I love this site. The people here are great! I amazed everytime how people pull together for others.

I thought I would update this thread with the info I have today.
Dan from Bay City Hardware "trim" the bill to $300. as part of his donation. (This isn't a plug on his part...he doesn't know I'm posting this)
As of today, the generous Ido members have donated $200. towards the repairs of Pete's boat.
I'm not sure what Pete's plans are for rod replacement. Dean, if you have any new info here, please update us.
Pete's boat is sitting on it's trailer where I get to see it every time I'm at Everts...my anger is tempered by the kind hearts of the Ido members. Thanks for keeping my blood pressure in check IDO!
Quote: So Brian, if I understand it right, he is still 100.00 short of paying for it? Thanks, Bill
That is correct Bill...for the boat. We are working on the rods & reels and tackle as of now.As a matter of fact 2 new St croix and Plueger reel combos just happened to get put into Petes camper today.

I understand that you haven't been soliciting for donations...but I look at it as a "Pay if Forward" kind of deal. I like to pick and choose who I help out......just glad to do what little we can.
Thanks to Dean, Brian, and all the other IDA members that have helped Pete, and all other worthy causes. As always....what a great site with such good members.
I'll be sending in 20.00 for him. That means all he needs is just 30.00 to cover the boat. Anyone else able to send anything to help? ''Any'' amount will help him. Thanks, Bill
ps Thanks a ton for the rods and reels for Pete Dean.
Geeezzz..... BK I was going to donate the last $30.00 but I am not at all interested in that picture.
Kidding aside, I have a grandfather who has a early 70's Lund that he loves. I caught so many fish out of that boat and had a lot of good memories. I am sure Pete has had many good memories in his boat. I would also like to pay it forward. Mark me down for the final $30.00. The check will be in the mail tomorrow.
That picture thing might deter you from getting the 30 bucks ! Dean, I have some rods and reels to donate.Nothing new, but decent stuff. I'll bring them up Thursday morning. wkw
