Island Lake?

#687755 - 06/27/08 03:35 PM

Does anybody have any knowledge or recomendations on Island Lake? It is just a little south of Hibbing on 73 and i will be spending some time on it on Sunday and Monday. I am open to fish for just about anything, but if there is a decent bass, pike, or walleye population that would be good to know. According to the DNR all are present. Thanks!

I'm originally from Hibbing, Island was never my first choice of fishing lakes. It has enough bass to keep you interested, the east shoreline was the best for us but we would catch them all the way around. Eye's, there is a population but they can be hard to track down. Pike...hammer handles, they would smoke our bass baits. I think the biggest pike we ever caught was about 2 lbs.

This is going off how we did 10 years ago.

Right across the highway to the North/east is Janet, good bass fishing, throwing buzz baits through the weeds.

Floodwood lake isn't far to the east, has a nice crappie population.

It's been a while since I've fished those lakes, except floodwood, I fish that in the winter, but I would imagine much hasn't changed on Island and Janet.

Island has a fishable muskie population these days.

Are you sure? I haven't heard of any stocking or natural Ski's in Island. The most recent 05 data doesn't show anything either.
After a little thought...I think your talking Island lake by Duluth, that one does have a muskie population.

I wound up fishing on Island for about 4 hours on Sunday afternoon and 3 hours on Monday afternoon. Between the guys I was fishing with and I we were able to land about 15 Largemouths and 6 pike, with a couple of the bass in the 3 pound range and one nice healthy 30" pike. Overall better than I expected. The bass came on texas rigged finnese worms and husky jerks, the pike came on spinner baits and husky jerks. Nice little lake.
