Merc Tilt/Trim Problem

#687929 - 06/28/08 05:28 PM

Ok Guys..I need some help if anybody can offer some....

Last week when I was getting ready to take my boat out (which very sadly was the 1st time of the year) I went to raise the motor up to put the transom saver on and all that happened was some clicking in the relays. It did this for both UP and DOWN. After a few clicks of the switch, it groaned a bit and finally the pump took off and the motor went up. Every thing seemed fine.
Then When I took it on the water, everything still seemed to be working properly until we headed it in for the day. on our way out of a shallow bay, the skeg scraped a shallow sandbar at trolling speed....Not a big hit, just wiggled the motor a bit. (This was a soft bottom) After this, I was able to get the motor down, but that was all it had. Now it just clicks in the relays.

My plan to dig into the problem is to start with seeing if the power is getting to the pump and go from there. Has anyone else encountered this problem before to give me any hints?

By the way, it is a 1991 60hp Mercury Tiller. Any ideas would be appreciated, as I really want to spend some time on the water this coming weekend.

Thanks for your help

We had something like that happen last year with my partners motor. I think he replaced the relay.

A buddy had the same thing and his turned out to be the relay. It was pretty easy to replace on his motor which is a 50 hp Mercury.

I had the same problem this spring on the river. Motor would go down just not up. The day befor it was acting up. Then the next day it went out. I had to replace the relay. Cheep fix but, a pain in the to get at. I would start with taking off your relay for your UP trim, and switch it with the DOWN trim and see if you just have one of the relays burned out.

You could try switching the wiring from the down relay/solenoid (newer motors have relays - the older ones have solenoids) to the up one and see if it will raise the motor. If so, the down relay/solenoid is bad and as long as you are replacing one, you should probably replace both because the other will likely go bad soon.

If this isn't it, you probably have a different issue - maybe just corroded connections?

The Mercury motors website has parts diagrams and numbers that will be helpful for seeing how your motor is set up and for telling your dealer what parts you need.

Good luck.

The motor won't go up or down, I have tried switching the relays with each other, and still nothing. I am thinking possibly the connections are corroded inside the pump housing, but won't know till I take it apart. Whatever it is, I hope it is cheap and easy to fix!!

A couple of years ago, the trim/tilt motor went out of my 115 Mercury. First started by making grinding sounds like something was loose in the motor. Then it quit all together. When they took the motor apart, one of the magnets had come unglued from the side of the motor. That was not cheap. I think just the motor was over $400.00.

We had the same problem about a month ago. Save some time and go get new relays for it. That is most likely your problem. Then, if it still doesn't work go through the hassle of the other stuff.

Sounds to me like the pump motor is going out on you. You should be able to take it to an electric motor shop and have it checked out.

Just a quick update!.... Got it fixed. Took the motor apart, and it was just a bit dirty inside. One of the brushes was stuck, which is likely the cause of the proplem. Cleaned everything up and put it back together. It worked all weekend without any further trouble. The best part is that the repair cost me $zero. Just a little labor

Thanks to all for the ideas
