Topwater Bassin

#687956 - 06/28/08 08:59 PM

Anyone have a good bite going yet???

I am not looking for any info, just wondering. It seems that with the later than normal spring some of my lakes are not producing like they have in the past years. YET
I have had a few nice fish but not the size OR numbers like I normally get.

So how is your bite going??

I just spent a week of vacation fishing pools 4 & 8. The topwater bite is just starting on the river for me. In fact I was catching smallmouths during the middle of the day on chug bugs and poppers. Water temps on sunday started at 69. By friday, morning temps of 75, afternoon temps in current of 79. I would think inland lake temps should be getting close. In the Eau Claire area, after some fry-guarding topwater action around memorial day, I usually don't start getting a good topwater bite until the fourth of July. Good luck

Water temps are still 66-67 degrees and Lg Mouth Bass/Bluegills have not spawned yet... I don't know how long they can hold out? We need some warm rains and summer temps...

It's been slow for me too. A few quality fish here, a bunch of smaller fish, but not what you'd expect for late June.

When it comes to top water Bass fishing I look for two things. 1) Are there Dragon Flies out? That tells me that the water is now warm enough. And 2) is there a defined inside weedline? The fish don't always use that inside weedline (though it's surprising how often it holds fish, even in the middle of the day). The inside line won't be there until the weedbed grows up and gets thick. Once the weeeds are that high they will hold numbers of fish for longer periods of time, giving you a lot more top water opportunities. As it is right now you see a fish here and a fish there and you're hoping you cross paths with them before they head back out to deeper water. The weedbeds on the lakes I've been fishing are just to sparce right now. Factor in clearer water and the Bass just aren't there.

I set the alarm for 3:45 this morning and when I got up the wind was already howling out of the NW, so I went back to bed. I must be getting old.

i went out on a smaller 100 acre lake last week and from 5am till 830am i landed 13 largemouth. 8 were over 18 inches also. All came on the frenzy fp7 popper. I still saw some bass on their nests too.

Steve, you had to set an alarm to go fishing
Your right Steve, you are getting old.

Ron,
I've been having a pretty good time with BIG Smallmouth this June,
that I have NOT been Largemouth fishing yet.
How pathetic does THAT sound????

I had a great day at Tonka this morning fishing all top water, I managed 2 18" and 1 that was probably 17 or so (give or take a few). I posted the pictures up in the bass photos forum. I was happy to be out of the wind and got some great fish. I outfished my partner 3-1 this morning and got to rub it in that I kicked his . he would be in the hole right now about 10 pounds if we kept track like we used to.

it was a great morning to be out in the boat and we fished all new water. so it was fun.
