Even during the middle of summer there is a huge population of smallies up shallow. Most of the fish I catch are on or around the reefs in 7ft or less. Has anybody ever target deeper rock for them? Like 15-20ft or more? I know there is a lot of competiton with the walleyes out there but don't the eyes move more towards the mud now? I hear all the time of walleye guys catching a few out there but are there many?

Not sure about Mille Lacs, but on Lk. Michigan last summer I found them suspended over 20FOW adjacent to mid lake reefs that ranged from 4 to 6 FOW. Deep diving suspending jerkbaits were the ticket during that outing
