Trolling motor gave up

#688609 - 07/01/08 05:51 PM

I have an older (not sure how old because it belongs to the neighbor) Minn Kota 65 mx trolling motor. A couple of friends and I went to Northern Wi last week and fished for 3 days. No problems. This morning, my son and I head out to Bass Lake. We motor out to one of our favorite spots and when I hook up the trolling motor, it will only run in reverse. After a little while it started running forward again. Then it would only kick in once I had twisted the handle all the way to full power. Then it got to the point where it would not do anything. At one point while messing with it, I look down and see my Hummingbird stopped humming. It came back on as soon as I hit the power button.
After I got home, I took the cover off the motor. Everything looks ok. When I turn the handle, forward or reverse, the rhoestat, at least that's the best name I can think of, clicks but that is it.
Any advise on fix or shop would be great.

This may sound simple... but check the connections and the wires all the way from the motor to the battery. Also, Make sure the battery can hold a charge and is charged.
It sounds to me like the battery is dead.

Thanks!
I have already checked all the connections. They all look good, no corrsion, nothing loose. I know one of my batteries is bad, but I have checked it with 2 other batteries that I am almost 100% sure are good. I will recheck everything today.
I don't want to spend much on it since it so old. I know I can just buy a new motor for less than 100 bucks. It don't take much to push the little 14ft Musky Hunter around.
