has any one used the berkley gulp? i got some minnows and crawlers at cabelas just recently. im thinking about using them for walleyes this year, in the past ive used em on bass but never walleye.

We took both the 3 inch minnows and leeches to Canada figuring we would test them vs live bait. We lindy rig and jig 99% of the time. We caught a lot of fish on real minnows, leeches, and crawlers. Then we put on the gulp, and it was darn near impossible to catch a fish. When we switched back to live bait, we caught fish again. It was very interesting. We did have some bites with the gulp, but most of the time they would bite and let go and not eat the bait like they did the live bait. I think the gulp would work better on spinners where the fish attack the bait more than a lindy.
This is me talking, and not Berkley...but I personally view these baits as lures that need to be fished dynamically and not statically. Meaning that plastics are best utilized on a jig and "Worked" to look alive and provide the feeding response from the fish. Live bait is much more apt to provoke or provide strikes in a static presentation like Lindy rigging. That is not to say that you will never catch a fish on a Gulp leech on a Lindy...but I would bet the farm that that same leech on a jig would provide more action.

I agree 100% with Tuck.
I have had very good luck with Gulp Alive this spring while walleye fishing however it's not something you would want to stick on the hook of a slip bobber rig. I've had the best luck using it just like you would a simple jig n' minnow and just like tuck said, Dynamically work the bait. Gulp is not my 'go-to' bait but I have been pleasantly surprised on how we'll it has worked.
Agreed the have to be moving as I dont think the fish can analyze it to long it has to almost be a reaction bite. I will say this spring Gulp i thought performed as good if not a little better pitching minnows into the shallows. as i didn't waste time rebaiting.
Using Gulp minnows last year in May and June I outfished people in the same boat using live bait. As mentioned you need to add some action. They don't typically work well vertically jigged but cast them and bounce them along the bottom and that changes everything. You have to be quick on the hookset most of the time too. I first discovered plastics on a fly-in about 15 years ago. We got on a good bite and ran out of minnows and crawlers. I switched to a 4" Power Shad (before Gulp) and literally caught walleyes every cast for 2 hours. We must have "matched the hatch" because I haven't reproduced those results with that bait since - in fact I still have a package left and they probably don't have much "power" anymore! Also the best honest report I've recorded in the past 3 years doing the creel survey on Rainy Lake came from a guide throwing Gulp minnows to shallow walleyes.
Yup, I'm agreeing with this as well. I think Gulp is a great product...but you gotta keep it movin. Best way to do this?....On a jig, as mentioned. I've had great times with Gulp on jigs, and I've also had action with them pulling spinners at 1.8 or so. Gulp is a great bait, but 95% of the time, you gotta keep it movin. For white bass...well, I'd say 50% of the time you gotta keep it movin. White bass KILL the Gulp!
