Trailer Question. Need some help!

#689341 - 07/04/08 10:51 AM

I have an older Spartan roller trailer, probably 1990.

When I first got this rig I would back into the water, then unhook the winch strap and safety chain and hook on a leash. A hefty shove and the boat would rumble off the trailer and into the lake.

Now as soon as I give any slack in the winch cable the boat is moving. It goes so easy that I can't hang on to it to hook up the leash, much less get the winch strap hook undone. And it seems to be getting worse. It heads down towars the lake like greased lightning!!!

Are my rollers worn out, is that why this happens? I'm really at a loss here so any suggestions would be most appreciated. Help!!!

Thanks

One fix that I am aware of is replacing the pin in your roller with a same size bolt and then you can squeeze up on the roller to build a little tension. Use a lock nut so that it won't back off and maybe do two rollers so that you don't have tension up on one to much. Hope this helps.

Age/wear make the rollers move easier. If the dollies are pivot brackets and you cannot swap a pin for a bolt, try adding a washer or two to each side of the roller to help add some friction.

Here is what I do so she doesnt take off, take your dock rope, give it wrap around the bow roller or something similar, back off the crank, the dock rope will keep it from taking off, undo the winch strap, undo the wrap with the dock rope and away it goes into the water with you hanging on to the dock rope
