Question for the IDO Staff

#689377 - 07/04/08 06:58 PM

I'm just curious what you guys do for a living. Do you all have jobs that have to do with fishing or what? I'm curious because I really hate working for a big corporation and am wondering what else is out there. If you'd rather not say its cool, really I'm jut curious. Hope everyone has a great 4th!

As for me, I don't mind saying. I work night security at a state facility, and yes, it stinks tremendously. But it pays the bills....for now. I'll graduate in May with an electrical tech degree, so hopefully that'll open some more doors.
In central Nebraska, there's not many opportunities to get into the fishing industry, unless you own a marine shop or marina, or something like that. I've been applying for jobs right and left, but haven't left my security job yet.

For now, the water temp is alomst 80 degrees here, so it's fish on.

I work for Mayo as a Lab Tech Assistant, I think I can safely say that most if not all of the IDO Staffers have regular jobs that are not related to the fishing industry, we need those jobs to pay for our time on the water and the days in the field.

I'm the supervisor of a digital printing dept. for a large screen printing company, working 45-50hrs a week. I maintain 4 large format roll-to-roll printers and one large format flatbed printer. I usually start my day with ink on my hands and end it trying to scrub it off.

Other than that, I'm a full-time Dad and part-time baseball coach.

Somewhere around all that, I squeeze in enough time to go fishing.

I was an IBM software engineer who took advantage of an early retirement buyout. I fish all year long and have been “smelling the roses” for the last six years.

I just recently came out of a 2.5 year retirement...forced back to work by the FW.

I work at American Test Center....in the sales dept ever since I tipped over a crane. No sharp pencils or paper clips at my desk. We test and inspect fire truck aerial ladders, platforms and ground ladders along with bucket trucks and digger derricks...like the ones Excel and Westar Energy uses.

Part time, which is sometimes more full time...I am the contact for IDO advertising. I work with the IDO Art Department (the fella formerly known as Tom Donaldson) and James Holst to give our sponsors a tailored advertising package that best fits their needs. Web and TV.

During a few months in the summer, my other part time job, that covers four days per week is guiding for flatheads and lake sturgeon. But...this isn't a job...it's a blast.

Occasionally, when the cookies are in season, I help out Deano at Everts Resort. This is as close to fishing as a person can get without wetting a line.

In my spare time, I post stuff on this web site. The FW says I have too much spare time.

I am a kitchen manager. I work some where around 50 hours a week and am a father of two. I tend to have more weekdays off than weekends so I drop off my kids at daycare during the week and than fish what/where I can, and then try back by 5 so I can be a dad at night.

I work in customer service, estimating and billing at a printing company. Been there since 1975. Spent 20 years working out back and due to too many work injuries I was put up front in 1995 to a desk job. Went through a divorce in 1992 and finished raising 3 of my 4 children myself. All of my kids and 9 grandkids and I are very close. My 10th grandchild is due this month. Other than being with my family I find that fishing is my other hobby. Family, fishing, and the Lord are all very important to me. I enjoy helping others to enjoy their time on the water more.
Thanks, Bill

I work as a Project Manager for a Commercial General Contractor / Developer on the North Side of the Cities. I work between 50-70 hours depending on the week. I like my job, but it really gets in the way of the outdoors. I wish I could Hunt and Fish more then I do. My other free time is spent on this great website called In-Depth Outdoors.

I'm a Sr. Account Executive for a IT services consulting firm called Magenic Technologies. We build custom software for our clients in and around the Microsoft platform (application development, e-commerce and business intelligence). I would love to work in the fishing or hunting industry but am thankful for my current position that allows me freedom to enjoy the outdoors.

I have been at CenturyTel for over 25 yrs. and worked my way up from a shovel, to Equipment operator, state cable splicer, engineer to now an OSP Inspector.
I take care of 118 exchanges ranging from La Crosse WI to Humbolt MN, watching over the outside plant contractors and approving there billing.

I would love to find a way to be closer to the fishing side of things for a living!

I am a Project Manager for a medical device company in the NW metro - hours are flexible and the workload comes in waves and there is travel wit the majority being international.

New focus in my life is my daughter who is 13 months old, the job is the necessary means to pay the bills and to buy boat gas!

Paying jobs in the industry are scarce and becomming fewer and father between with the current state of the economy. Good luck pursuing your dream.

There is only one IDO staff member who I'm aware of who is full time, now that BK's wife annouced she was sick of his alternative lifestyle(you know, catfishing). The reality is, there are very few well paid full time jobs in "the outdoor" industry. I'm not trying to say don't pursue the oppurtunities, but be prepared to work extra hard to find that job and keep it. In the mean time, do what you have to do. Good luck!!
