Carp fishing the metro

#690244 - 07/08/08 04:02 PM

Hey guys, The fishing around my place has beeen slow for a while now and i'm starting to get kind of board of it! Not even the gills are biteing? So I was reading in the this weeks outdoor news and saw the article on carp fishing and that really got me thinking... I have not been carp fishing in a while and really dont have any spots in the south metro area {Minneapolis,Bloomington, shakope} to go to. I'm not asking for any honey holes but just some places to go wet the line and maybe hook up with some carp. Also what is everybodys go to bait for carp? I have always done well on oatmeal balls.

Corn has always been my go to bait for carp. Cheap, effective, portable, reusable - yay corn.

I don't have much experience in fishing carp down your way as I have always been a north metro guy, but if you are fishing either the Miss or Minnesota, I would focus on shallow sand flats during the afternoon or early evening.

Marion has the most carp I've seen on thhe aqua-vu, and shallows. I'd start looking in the shallow bays north side of the lake east of I35. Spring Also used to have a bunch seen some big ones out there.

All of the Minneapolis city lakes have good populations of carp. The beefier ones are in Calhoun, Harriet, and Nokomis (in my experience).

Corn has been my go-to for a long time. Try it on a floating jig head sometime. Crawlers work great too, but you'll have a lot of bullheads to contend with. Oatmeal is probably my second favorite carp bait. Bread is good, too, especially if they're feeding on the surface. Just a small piece of bread on a hook - no weight at all.

The Mississippi and Minnesota rivers have a ton of carp, too. Don't overlook the river. My PB was caught on the Minnesota last year. 17 lbs on cut shad... that was a really cool incidental catch.

I've often wondered how many Brits would pay for the opportunity to catch a bunch of scrappy Minneapolis carp.

I've always wondered that too. About 20 years ago I took some guys from Japan & the U.K down to Calhoun & they couldn't believe how great the carp fishing was. At the time I lived just a few blocks away & was fishing it for carp regularly. I've pondered the idea of a carp guiding/bed & breakfast type deal ever since. Maybe someone has already done this.
