10 days until Chetek!

#690583 - 07/09/08 04:53 PM

Well, it's 10 days and counting until we leave for our annual vacation to Chetek. We've been counting this down for a long time, as we always do. I posted last year for some fishing advice, if anyone wants to post some helpful tips to find some fish, I'd appreciate it. We'll even take the small ones, as long as we're catching 'em. This is the only time most folks in the group get a chance to fish. We'll be staying at the Silver Birch Inn.

I have a trailer on pokegema lake, i have been up to chetek about 15 times already this summer.
Fishing was good around memorial weekend, slowed a bit..But has picked up somewhat, panfish have been running about average and wallleye bite has slowed way down.I haven't caught a legal eye the last two times up.Many small ones.
4th weekend was busy, we searched a lot of spots until we got into some real nice bluegills.Seemed away from boat traffic was a key, and shallow water 2-3' most have spawned out.But did catch a few with eggs.
The bait of their choice was euro worms and waxies, with a moonglow jig.(chartruese) Also white glow jigs worked well..
Leeches haven't been as good for me this summer,i usually always use them but they are not what the fish want as much..
Prairie lake has been on and off, a lot of searching and sorting through small fish.Lake chetek has been ok as well..
Moose ear and ten mile are where i have been the last two outings with real success,8",9" and 10" gills were active along with a lot of smalle crappies.Euro worms were the ticket..
We did a little drifting for crappies but the boat traffic was heavy, hoping this weekend will be a little quieter.
The key has been to move asap.if small fish are biting and switching colors and bait..
Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I have never heard of Euro worms--do you get them in the Chetek area?

Should be able to get them at the Rod and Gun in town. They are a "tuff" worm. Meaning you can catch a lot of fish on just one.

Good Luck,

i'll have to try some of these euro worms as well. i'm guessing they are different from what i know as grubs, or wax worms? Only 8 more days now!

just beware of what you read in the papers as to the fishing report up here. For the walleyes are not jumping in the boat as it was said in the Wis Outdoor News. I know people who fish the lake on almost a daily basis and the walleye bite is not hot at all. The walleyes do seem to be making somewhat of a comeback so please if you get one put it back we need to crp as many as possible.

I have a trailer in the camp ground between Ojaski and Prairie. I have never caught as many walleye as I have this year while fishing for crappies with a jig. Allot are small but the numbers are increasing. I did find a crib and caught a nice 2 1/4 off it last week. A guy I know has been having good luck fishing with a leech under a bobber. As for the crappies, they have been running small this year.........at least for me. Got into some very nice bass last Sat. even with all the wind.

Less than 3 days till we head north. Anyone have any suggestions where we might have a good shot a catching some crappies or gills?

Whitey...i wont be able to post while up there to let ya know how we did. We'll be staying at the Silver Birch, leaving on the 26th. If you're arriving on the 25th, stop by if you get a chance. Years past, there are usually a number of boats drifting for crappie by the Silver Birch, I'm sure we'll be giving that a try, you might want to give it a shot as well. Hope you slay them, heck, hope WE slay them....best of luck.

Well, vacation ended yesterday and it was an absolute blast, already looking forward to next year in Chetek. We caught hundreds of crappie (and many many gills), but none that had any size (or Fish O Rama tags). A northern, walleye, and some perch were also caught. All were put back in. By the way, the northern was a 26"er....caught off the dock of the Silver Birch Inn.

We got back yesterday and can't wait to go back. We too caught hundreds of fish--that lake must have a million crappies. Most were small but we got some eater crappies, some nice gills and some keeper perch. We are going back next year for sure!
