Just a quick report! I had a couple hours last night to burn and decided to run after eyes instead of going and getting bullheads for catfishing. Ended up running into a great wingdam bite. On dam gave up 3 quality fish in 4 cast!!! Cant beat that action. I was olny down there from 7-9pm so was olny throwing cranks and blue was by far the dominate color. Purple came in second. Biggest fish was 27.5 but out of the 6 eyes I caught olny one was under 24". Great to see this bite going strong yet so take advantage if you get the chance. May flies were out in full force for the 1st time that I have seen. Dont know if that will affect anything as far as the walleyes go but sure keep you from talking too much while running down the river
Sounds like some good fishing. Was wondering when the mayflies would take off. Where they on the main channel or back waters? Ill be down in the morning. Breakfast at Park diner at 6 and on the water by 7.
A wing dam is a manmade barrier that, unlike a conventional dam, only extends partway into a river. These structures force water into a fast-moving center channel which reduces the rate of sediment accumulation, while slowing water flow near the riverbanks.
The Mississippi River has thousands of wing dams which were originally constructed to reduce the amount of dredging required when the main navigation channel was maintained to at least 4½ feet (1.37 m). Since that time, additional conventional dams have been built to increase the water level in the river, doubling the depth of the navigation channel to 9 feet (2.75 m). The wing dams still serve their purpose, but to a lesser extent than before.
3 big fish in 4 casts is outstanding. I may have to get out for an evening bite one of these days. I wonder if the moon being up early is having any effect on when the fish are biting.
Mike, good luck out there this weekend! They were covering the back channel areas pretty good but at each entrance to those cut they had crawled out all along the trees. Once out running the river they werent a problem but could olny believe they got thick last night. I remember last year on the way back from catfishing one night it looked like it was a blizzard out when running by all the lights on the refinery. Tood a juicy one to the forhead
Joe, Nice boat I think that one was about 26. Took a little work for that one. Had to let the dog out at her favorite little swimming hole and seen you guys over there. Any luck??? Been doing best from about 9:45-10:15 for those wiskery ones!
Had one good hit there from a flatty. Caught a couple channels, that is a good spot normally for big girls. We went north when we left and did pretty good.
