Pool 14 has cleaned up and the walleye are biting

#692828 - 07/17/08 04:25 PM

What 7 days can do to the river. It was down and cleaned up real good.

The bite is great. Caught a 28 1/2 (6 lb, 12 oz) and 18". The first was my personal best. Had a number of others on but they broke off before they were in the net. Also caught catfish and bass. All were had on a three way and crawler on wingdams.

Hope it keeps up

Have a great day.

Great Job fishon 1
The river is looking better and hope we don't get the 5 inches of rain that the weather man is talking.
Again great job and I like the picture.

If it were not for the Rock River influence, we would be in better shape on 16. I like those green and bronze fish personally, but walleye are good bonuses. Hopefully soon. Last time out I caught as many walleye, no not sauger, as bass. Still waiting here. LOL.

I made it out for a few hours this evening (Friday) and did quite well on a couple wings, with six legals and several slot fish, also on 3-ways and bait.
With the occasional light drizzle coming down, it was also remarkably quite for a Friday evening. Very few other boats on the water!
Congrats on the personal best Fishon1.

Has anyone else noticed the exceptional quality of the fish caught on 14 this year? I wanted to post a pic of a couple of the slot fish I got last night, but water on the lens pretty much ruined that. One 26-27" fish that probably went 7 lbs or more, and a 24'er that was equally FAT.
I have caught a few skinny fish this summer, but on average the fish are thick and fatter than I remember in recent years.

I was out last night also, not may people fishing at all in my neiborhood . I can't wait for the fall wing dam bite with the fish this fat already , they will be swimming footballs by November. I can't say enough good things for the DNR putting the slot on this pool and closing the dam in the winter. They are creating a world class fishery right in are back yard . I have heard of several people breaking the law by filleting these protected slot fish. JUST HOW GOOD DO THOSE FISH TASTE THAT IT'S WORTH GOING TO JAIL OVER. I just wish people would see that the laws are there for a reason. They are working.

Amen to that jigfan! I have also heard of some slot fish being eaten. Some by people oblivious of the slot, others who simply put themselves above the law. I think public awareness for the slot could have been promoted much more effectively by simply placing signs at river access points up and down the river, with minimal cost. If, as I hope, the slot becomes permanent, I would hope that will be done. It may have to come from private actions rather than the DNR, but I think it would help.
I have been surprised by the vast number of people who do not regularly target walleyes who know nothing, or very few specifics, on the slot. Getting the info out is a big step in the right direction. Those who know the law and choose to ignore it, I say throw away the key. Revoke licensing permanently.
As we get a few years into the slot law, I hear less and less from naysayers who did not like the idea. The slot is unquestionably improving our fishery greatly. I have been ramping up my support efforts for a permanent slot. It will have to be decided relatively soon. I speak often to DNR officers from Iowa and Illinois, and always end our conversation with a strong show of support for the slot and the closing of the dams. It seems that the dam closings have somewhat less support than the slot, but I hope this will change. I have seen a remarkable increase in quality of saugers caught on 14 the last couple years. I believe that to be due to the success of the closings.
Lets keep it going!

I agree 100%! I just wish every one had you conservation minded way of thinking. The bite today was hot!!! We put 23 eyes in the boat this morning before 11:00 . After the big storms last night I figured the bite would be tough ,I was wrong. We had 5 slots but no real big ones . Jig and crawler was the ticket. There was lots of boats out this morning . I hope everyone had a good day. Please let the big girls swim!

john, I think that you have a good idea about posting the sighs at the ramps and ect, as iam sure there are alot of people that are not targeting walleye that dont know about the slot.I would love to see them put the 800 target poachers # on there also and encorage people to take down boat #s and call in if they see someone taking illeagle fish.Because I belive there are alot of people that are aware of the slot and dont care. I called the cp last weekend a guy who watched me catch a 20+ fish and let it go he asked why and told me that he would have liked to have it ,the guy that was with me explained how the slot worked to him very politley. an hour later he he caught a probaly 22 23 inch and put it on stringer he had tied to a tree , he was fishig from shore)The stringer had a 1/2 dozen drum and 3 0r 4 very small smallmouth on it . we told him that the fish was not a keeper and he just smiled, so i called. I know it sounds kind of childish but i belive if the cp show a agressive hand with it that it would slow down alot of it . And like jig fan said in a short time we would have a outstanding fishery. I also try to encourage people to revive there fish when letting them go , I dont know how much it helps them for sure but i know it dont hurt.

We are mainly casting jigs. The fish are all over the water colum . I caught them from 3 ft to 17 ft. I would say they are trending deeper with the water at 80 degrees. We pulled 11 fish off a gravel and clam bar that is on the edge of the main channel in 15 to 17 ft of water. On the other hand we pulled a few off wingdams in as little as 3 ft up close to shore. There not quite set in there mid summer pattern yet of hanging out on wingdam tips and channel edges, but it's not to far off. I hope this helps.

Are any of you guys going to be fishing 14 this weekend? It sounds like a great place to try. Where should I put in at? Might see you out there.

I just started to fish this upper end of the pool and I think I could make a habit out of it. Caught a 17, an 18, and two 19 inch fish this morning before work, along with numerous smaller fish and a 15 inch largemouth. They were just hammering a glass shad from anywhere on top of the dam to the flat in front of the scour hole. Had lots of fun and plan on keeping it up for the next few days. Andy, the ramp in Camanche in Swan Slough is close to a lot of good fishing. If you go tomorrow, stay away from LeClaire- RAGBRAI is in town and Davenport will be nuts with BIX stuff going on. I'll be fishing out of camanche for the next three days, look for a skinny guy with a tracker pro team with a bigfoot merc.

COONIE, very nice to meet you out on the water Sunday! Fishing was a little off for us, as you saw, but we still caught some very nice fish and had a great time. We ended up with several nice legal size fish and a few overs. It was a beautiful day on the old Miss!

Nice to meet you as well. My wife didn't last much longer after you guys left, as her hangover was getting the best of her. I honestly didn't think that we would make it out at all after getting home at 2AM. I had planned on getting out before work today, but my one year old decided to get up around 2:30 and didn't go back to sleep until 4. I made the decision to stay home and sleep in my bed, rather than find myself waking up on a creeeper under a truck later today! The weather doen't look too bad for the rest of the week, so there is a chance I might still get out there. Once again, great meeting you and looking forward to seeing you out on the water.
