Slow weekend at Sherman 7/20/08

#693519 - 07/20/08 10:39 PM

Spent the past weekend at Sherman and it definitely could be called slow. The light winds, heat, humidity and coming off of the full moon added up to be a real downer. The lake has to be at all time highs for this time of year and the shad hatch was a good one. The shad are beginning to ball up and there is a little early morning and late evening action. The whites don't stay up long so you have to be right on them to get any surface action. And it doesn't help that the resident population of 14 seagulls are too full of shad to fly.

We put in plenty of time on the 9.9 Mercury but to little avail, one small pike and a short walleye. But as Jimmy V said, "Don't give up, don't ever give up." I'll be back to the cabin soon.

A shout out to Shermanator .................... Nice to meet up finally. Good luck with that pack of kids. Keep them interested in fishing and they will all turn out to be liars ................ I mean good kids.

Just got back from the lake 9/17/08. The bite is really slow again this weekend. There has been a major mayfly hatch this past week and along with that the shad are all over the lake. We didn't really score on many crappies on the rocks. Talked to a couple of friends who had done all right the week prior but we only caught a couple of shorts in the time that we spent on the dam. Also fished brush piles in 3,5,7, and 8 without a great deal of success. Most fish in the brush were too small. I think many are still out suspended chasing shad.

Can you see the brush piles by the beaver hut?

I went on saturday, just off the bank by rocks and caught 6 crappie but only 4 were keepers. Those 4 were very nice. Also, caught probably 7 or 8 largemouth but the biggest was probably 4 inches. At one spot, I got attacked by mayflies.

Thanks Brian ........ just have to blame the manual typewriter that I was using back in the '60's. Either that or the onset of "old timers disease."

Sounds great; just keep me informed. I know that Graham will need to fish next Sunday; maybe we can run down that way. He went to Alliance last weekend but had to come home after one day.

I'm starting to pick up a few sub days and that will really interfere with the fishing. Darn work anyways.
