More netting press

#693940 - 07/22/08 10:16 AM

Here is a link for a local paper that everyone might not have seen. I find it interesting that we are all bigots now that we have stood up for ourselves and our future generations. I guess they can spin it however they like to make themselves feel better

The part of the story that I liked was that they were hacked and shut down for awhile. Can you say Karma.

Nick Coleman is an idiot! The article has no point and is ill timed. Must be slow over at the Strib. GET A LIFE - NICK!

This article also spurred some comments on 1500 KSTP this morning. They fell head over heels for the "Racist" angle. Bunch of idiots over there too. When you start your story "I don't know all the facts....." and go downhill from there. You just lost a lot of respect from this listener!

My feelings are the same as everyone elses YET a couple of idiots that are against tribal netting DID put a very racist spin on the whole thing by saying some very nasty things. These were in the form of editorials and blogs. I remember reading them and going, "Oh No!!! These negative comments are going to come back and put a negative spin on protestors thoughts on netting..."...And they did...RR

Interesting! I don't have a problem with most of what is printed, (arrests either on or off the res, but a majority are tribal residents) I do have a problem with promised articles/interviews which never materialize, I also have a problem with Vivian Clark trying to hold a straight face, when she obviously has an agenda.

Can anyone help me find all the "racist comments?"

I'd like to see what all the commotion is about.

Thanks

Another short sighted, non-factual piece of worthless media diversion. I guess I need to stand up and yell, YES, I'M A RACIST. AGAINST ANYONE WHO NETS OUR LAKES. Good grief, the amazing part, I've still yet to get a response from the Messenger, GLFIWC or MN DNR on lots of my questions. Of course, asking questions makes me a racist. Just ask Brett Larson at the Messenger.

Of course, I'm also a fisherman and an IT guy, so I'm probably the reason their site went down. Not the fact their IT staff sucks. Talk about a racist/predjudice statement by Coleman. Apparently fact finding is no longer part of the media profession. How do these people get to keep their jobs?? I wish I could lie at work all the time. It would certainly make my life easier.

This bigot sent an enlightening email to Nick, who happens to be the brother of a friend of mine from Cretin. I would hope he reads it and understands the stance we here at IDO have taken, and the race issue is a non-issue except where one race has rights that other Americans do not.

Fact finding has never been a strong point with Nick Coleman! I always wonder what color the sky is in his little world..... Again, a full fledged idiot!

Thanks Jon.

After reading all the posts, most were appropriate in my opinion.

Very passionate but not out of line.

A few guys came off sounding like imbeciles though… I’d call their statements racist.

It’s amazing how if you disagree with a minority group you’re considered a racist.

I get that from a few of my future in-laws…. Very, VERY liberal future in-laws.

First of all, I'd like to say Coleman's article was just a 'story', not news. With news you would have to get both sides and not take sides. He just wrote whatever the messenger told him as though it's fact; really? I can't imagine the viatrol and accusations if the shoe were on the other foot, but then I don't think "we" would pilage the resource like "they" are doing. It's NOT a race thing to me, it's a common sense thing, if you keep netting without real monitoring, the resource is going to suffer, fact. If those that 'report' what is going on simply wear their racist blinders, the real issues are lost.

His first comments about the fisherman from the nearby Mille Lacs Tribe is alittle off base. I believe the "natives" shown in the video, were cleaning their fish in tents at the landing, because they couldn't truck them home (Wisconsin) without them spoiling first. This Nick guy, really comes off as a idiot, maybe that is what he was after...

Nick needs to get a life. Like some of you have stated, there is no real point to this story, unless he is in fact trying to stir the pot over this issue once again. I realize there are a few good people working for the Messenger, but there are some real complete morons that work there as well. If they want to fight fire with fire, that is fine with me, I won't back down from my opposition to gill netting.

It seems there is a lot of focus on Nick Coleman here. That focus is misguided. The people most hurting the "stop netting" cause are the ones writing beligerent posts that tend to be racially slanted. Do you want to know why people neutral to the debate think of "our-side, the conservation side" as toothless crackheads living in out-state trailer houses? Read some of the posts. They are priceless to the other side. -lw

copied/pasted from this weeks messenger!! sounds like Brett dosesn't agree with the direction Nick went with the story........

Brett Larson - Columnist fishes, editor takes bait
by Brett Larson
Editor

I got a call from Star Tribune columnist Nick Coleman last week. As a former flame-throwing left-wing columnist myself (though in a much smaller pond), it was fun to talk to an old comrade-in-arms.

Two minutes into the conversation, I thought, "Uh oh. He's fishing for a controversy." Coleman was asking about last week's attack that shut down our website. I momentarily considered shutting up, but then decided I'd talk to Mr. Coleman the same way I'd talk to anyone else who called me on the phone or stopped in the office to ask my opinion. I was open, honest and straightforward.

After our conversation, I sent him two emails from our host company explaining the facts of the website attack. I told him the host company said it was not an attack by an individual but by an "automated robot."

He emailed back: "Whose robot?"

I emailed again, telling him our host company's servers are attacked 200,000 times a day by this type of robot, but the attacks are repulsed. For some reason, our site was vulnerable. Conspiracy theorists might still think someone was out to get us. I don't, and I told Coleman so.

It didn't matter. Coleman had his angle before he ever talked to me, and he was determined to find the juicy controversy to support that angle.

I shouldn't complain too much, because I come off as a hero - the courageous editor fending off the arrows of ignorance, injustice and racism.

When I saw the article in Monday's Star Tribune, I said, "Oh, brother." My worst fears were confirmed when I saw the headline: "Tribal fishing video spawns bigotry, attack on news site." The first half of that headline is, in my opinion, true. Just go to our YouTube site and read the comments for yourself. The second half is ridiculous, as I tried to explain to Mr. Coleman.

The irony of an editor claiming he was misquoted will not be lost on the Messenger's astute readers. I can hear the chorus of "Serves him right" echoing from Wahkon to Wealthwood.

I'll spare you all the context Coleman left out, and the details of how he put quotation marks around paraphrases. Suffice it to say that I told Coleman I didn't think this was a malicious attack. He asked me if anyone had reason not to like us. I said, "Lots of people don't like us" and mentioned resorters, Nexus opponents, some Band members, Steve Fellegy, people accused of felonies and the mayor of Isle. I told him a gill net controversy and a video we posted to the web caused some racial tensions to flare up. Never did I suggest that any disgruntled anglers or politicians might be responsible for the attack.

I also didn't bring up the Isle Days controversy from a few years ago. That was Coleman's doing. I told him the conflicts and tensions in the area had died down since I was a reporter here 10 years ago.

My comment about the mayor piqued Coleman's interest. He asked why DeCoursey doesn't like us. I told him he'd been to court and didn't like our coverage. I said he was found not guilty and the record had been expunged. Coleman dug up the details and printed them. Coleman quoted me as saying, "Maybe the mayor did it," which is absurd, because I kept telling him this was probably not an attack by an individual.

I regret that I mentioned the mayor of Isle in our conversation. He and his family have been trying to put the events of the last year behind them, and my loose tongue made that more difficult.

I'm not a "no comment" type, and I'm not going to change my approach. As a journalist, I believe in transparency in government as well as the media. If anyone asks me for my opinion, I'm going to give it. But in the future, I might be a little less forthcoming with flame-throwing liberals.

I can't believe I read the thing. Best part of the story was the mayor mixing it up in the beer garden. Whatever that had to do with the actual column. What a piece of junk.
