Need to vent

#693951 - 07/22/08 10:40 AM

So im out fishing today and there is this guy anchored where i normaly troll a 3-way rig for walleyes. I figured he was catfishing. He had 3 rods out the back of the boat (the law is 2) and i watched him catch a short walleye, in the livewell it goes. I said to him "you know there is length limits on walleye" his response was so what. That made my blood boil a little bit . I continued fishing and i was doing very well, i was just catch and releasing today because i didn't feel like cleaning fish. He says to me dont throw them back i will take them. I said im sure you would as i released a 18 incher back into the water. Then this guy pulls in a HOG, probably pushing 26" never once did he measure the fish he just threw it straight into the livewell. I pulled up the trolling motor and went just upstream and called the DNR with his boat numbers. About 30min later here comes the DNR and i watched him bust the guy. I was all done fishing so i drove back by him to go to the boat ramp and waved at him he just shook his head. I hate people that dont want to follow the law. I can understand if he didn't know the limits on walleye, but he should have cared a little more after i told him that there was length limits.

Way to go on calling the DNR. Glad they got him

After the DNR nabbed him he was able to keep fishing? I would think that they would escort him back to the dock??? RR

That is just awesome! Not very often the DNR actually can get there in time to make the bust!

This is one of the (little) things that makes this site so extraordinary. People who don't mind getting involved when they see someone violating the law. Kudo's to you my friend.

another problem is, sometimes u forget ur cell phone when u need it i've never called a dnr but just give me a reason to. i don't even know whom our pool 14 dnr is, do we have one from il. and ia? maybe u or someone could list their cell # here. i've seen two guys double dippin first hand last spring but we had nothing to call it in when they came back... a bad storm sent us all home. after dumping their first limit. they came back, we stayed in the harbor. we pulled in within a few boat lengths from them again and they caught another limit. now thats rubbin a guy the wrong way there were a total of 4 boats all fishing withing 50 yds and they had the honey hole for sure. between short and slot fish, we come up short of one limit. oh wellllllllll, just another day on the river.
maybe u could help alot of people and give their cell #. are there two in pool 14, one from il. and ia.? without having them in my fab 5 and or a phone book handy, i'd never find them in time............. i know some poeple that got busted for way over their limits in the freezer, fishing every day, making no bones about keeping their limits whenever they could. some people not catching their limits and seeing this day after day
took offense to it and the guy got busted.

If you have a Il license all the dnr #s or on the back . The T.I.P. # is 1-877-236-7529 , and the regional # is 1-815-625-2968. Thank You for having the guts to do this I have seen a few people breaking the slot law . I guess if we all do a better job of calling when we witness this maybe the word would get around to these dead beat fisherman. They might think twice before they break the law. Thanks again from a fellow pool 14 fisherman.

Iam glad they caught him , thats a realy fast responce time (30) min with as spread thin as the DNR officers are seems like most of the time they dont get to catch them in the act. Good job.

Great job making the call. Too many people get angry but don't take that important step to contact the DNR. Kudo's to you!

I have another contact number in my cell phone for the U.S Fish and Wildlife officer in this area, who I've called a couple times. He generally is aware of what officers are on what pools, so can often get someone there in a timely fashion.
I'll get his number and post here as well. I believe his name is Darrin Witt. Not sure on the first name. Great guy and a sportsman as well as enforcement officer.

From a safe boating distance, I couldn't tell if a 12" fish was a sauger or a walleye. But I do know that a 26" fish looks better swimming.

The easy number to call is 911. The 911 operator will connect you with the proper party. Last year I was almost run over by a 35' cruiser, I called 911 to report the incident. And just last weekend I was turning left onto an entrance ramp in a no passing zone and some moron passed me on the left going pretty darn fast. Had I not looked in my rear view mirror he would have T-boned me. I called 911 the operator said she would contact the highway patrol.
