Jami Ritter and I got out for a few hours and hit our milk run of wingies. My first cast I got hit and missed on a Hornet. The second cast I connected with a nice one. We pulled about 6 fish tonight in the short amount of time out. Even a sauger hit at boatside.
We really got into the smallies off a couple spots. They were in about a foot of water just blasting shiners.
nice job guys, now let me ask a question what line are you guys using for casting the wingies? i have my casting rod spooled with fireline and seem to have an unusaul number of brake offs this year (2 more shad raps last night, my stimulas check is running out) now i'm not saying these are all fish because you know how wing dams are but it does seem to be a lot.
No Erick, there is still way to much crap in the boat. Time to manure out all the non river gear...
Slack, I'm using 20 lb power pro and Tuck is using 10 lb Suffix Braid. Fishing wingies you will lose cranks, thats just part of the game. I think we both lost 2 cranks last night to the rock gods.
The 10 pound Suffix Performance Braid helps get cranks down to the rocks faster which is what I like. It has a thinner profile that cuts through water nicely. PP and Fireline in that weight do the same. I have noticed many fewer break-offs with the Suffix. Ritter noticed the opposite being true. But he breaks everything! I lost one crank last night.
yeah i know all about the rock gods but you would think after 30 years of sacrifices they could give me a break. but it seems my break offs are on the hook set, do you think if i only spun 180 degrees instead of 360 it would help?
Usually while running power pro with cranks there is no need to set the hook. I use 7' med and med/light action rods and most fish will load up the rod on there own. Every now and then if your pulling the baits really slow they will pop it like they do when your pitching jigs. thats about the olny time I hammer them. Remember there is 0 streach to this line. Even with 150 ft of line out its easy to rip them hooks out.
Nice fish guys! Sorry to hear about the rock gods....I know a guy that can help you out replacing those crankbaits though.
Seriously, though, using some tygear tyable leader material will save a lot of cranks when fishing wingdamns or rocky areas. It will not impede the action of the crank either.

buschman, the funny thing is, i know that, i even remind myself right after i lose a lure, old habits are hard to break i suppose i'll just have to fish more to re-train my self
Nice fish men! I was using 10/2 fireline for about a trip or two last year and the crank lossage was so bad i went to 14/6 fireline. I still lose them; but not nearly as bad. And if the crank I'm pitching isn't getting down deep enough I switch to a deeper running crank. The 27" I got on P2 last Tuesday was on a Bomber 7A instead of the usual 6A. I felt that I wasn't getting down on the end of that wingdam as deep as I wanted to get. So I switched it up and BAM!
I am pretty sure I saw you out there fishing a wingie that I always planned on checking out but never got around to fishing. I guess I'll have to give it a look see.

It's my new diet plan. If I just crop my photos, and I look skinnier.
Besides, if I posted any more than what is there I would have your little ankle biting banging on my door wanting to know why I am giving out all the good spots!
Hey John has Bob announced one for the 5th? If he has I haven't seen it. Last I heard he was going to do one some time before labor day. If its the 5th we need to do some publicity. Later sir!
Joel, he PM'd me about it but I guess I haven't see any annoucement. I suppose he'd better get on his horse! It isn't the greatest night for me, though, so if it's rescheduled my heart won't be broken.
