Any reports for Pool 9?

#694956 - 07/25/08 12:03 PM

Been hearing the walleye bite is on. Can anyone second that or have been there to prove it? I'll plan on heading that way if it's true.

The bite is fair caught a 26 and a half this past week with four others around the 24 to 25 inch mark. You really have to work for them , their has been alot of grass coming down so trolling has been almost impossible for me.Last night was out for awhile and the river is cleaning up some so it can only get better. There are also alot of eaters in the 15 to 19inch range being caught.

Well I headed there anyway. Fished Saturday and Sunday. Yes it wasn't easy but we did fairly well. My wife landed a 30 incher and my jaw almost hit the floor of the boat. That's going to cost me some $$$ to get that one mounted. My largest was 3 lbs. and somewhere around 9 keepers all taken on crank baits. 10 short fish were taken on crawlers and too many cat fish.

The P9 Walleye bite has been nothing short of spectacular since the June flooding. I've easily boated 2x as many Walleye up to this point this summer than I have the previous two combined. After the late June high water receeded, throwing cranks in as little as 3 to 7 fow of water - along current breaks associated with rocks at daybreak has produced some very big fish. Unfortunately I'm afraid the eye's on 9 are transitioning into a true summer pattern. The wing-dings still and will always a hold a few but the majority have migrated into running sloughs that contain at least 10+ feet of a little cooler water. The trick to boating Q&Q (quantity & quality) is target shallow sandbars adjacent to deep water in running sloughs at daybreak & dusk. August Eye's have a tendency to "group hunt" - chasing shad ontop of sandbars and laying in ambush waiting for the prey to move back out. Find this situation on old man river and you'll put some Q&Q in your boat.

fish them all

Thanks for tips Bosman. Good insight for finding walleyes in late summer.

Thanks bosman for the info. I really have the bug to get out. So tired of roofing. A buddie of mine has been slamming the walleyes and northern on pool 9 for the last 3 weekends, he has told me that he is fishing a tight slough north of hte dam on the Iowa side a few miles, but will not tell me where. He said he has only ever seen 2 other boats there while he was fishing, and he has a cabin there. Think ill stick to the wingdams and sand bars, I could prob spend a day or more trying to find his spot on a spot. All i know is he said it is north or the eagles nest, or crows nest or something. Thanks tho for helping me out on the very few days I get to get out. I love the old miss.

You get off the main channel down in the Winneschiek south of the Lansing bridge and it's not too bad. A good day of exploring and you'll pretty much cover all four corners. However, you get into the MN Slough - north of the Lansing bridge and it will take days to explore. It can be tricky to navigate in the low water levels so be alert and cautious.

This morning I stopped at one of four rock crops I've been fishing for a good month now. It's a blessing to be able to pull over on your way to work - pop your trunk - grab a pole and fish for 30 minutes to an hour before going to work. I've done very well along these rocks pulling walleye to shore except for this past week. Nothing but bass & pike. Did get into some snake gar yesterday at different spot. The absense of walleye along these rocks "tells" me to have my boat up in swift cut - across from Blackhawk Park tomorrow. Snapped a picture of one of the peter-pike's this morning for good measure. They all go back in the water so group pictures aren't feasible......

I'll make it easy north of Lansing. Put in at Blackhawk park (WI) Shoot across the main channel to the west. Turn north towards MN and the 1st creek mouth to your left will be the Iowa River. Fish the mouth north!!!! The 1st 100 yards is where you'll get the goodies. I do this every tourny. Never win but finish in the top 8. damn wife of mine got a 30 incher last Saturday night. This place is 3 1/2 hours from the house so we try our best while there. Ho get ready for those northerns......we had more then I care for of those.
